Hired after the illustrious 17 day tenure of Manny Diaz, Carey was plucked from Northern Illinois where he had won the MAC championship. Whats ironic is Temple’s then Athletic Director Pat Kraft wanted a “safe hire.” Tired of watching coaches use Temple as a stepping stone, he went with a veteran coach who “wanted to be at Temple.” But while Kraft wanted to avoid another coaching search after 3 years, Temple is now looking for a new coach after 3 years.
Carey becomes the first Temple head coach to be fired since 2006 when the Owls let go of disaster Bobby Wallace. Carey wasnt the mess that Wallace was, but he was close. After going 8-5 primarily with Matt Rhule and Geoff Collins recruits. But even despite the 8 wins, Temple was completely undisciplined. Carey followed that up with a 1-6 season but he had the ability to blame Covid. Then the 2021 season came. 3-9 with one of those wins coming against an FCS team. They ended with a 7 game losing streak where they were outscored 299-59.
