What a year 2022 was for Philadelphia Sports! The Eagles had an improbable end to 2021 and started 2022 with a playoff game! The Sixers finally traded Ben Simmons and got James Harden BACK. The Phillies had an unbelievable run to the World Series! The Union were a few minutes away from an MLS cup. The Flyers…..tried….but while it didnt end in a championship, it was a fun year.

So what is there to look forward to in 2023? Here are some key dates. And just some key time frames. Some of these dates arent set yet, so I had to simply give you the month. But its set to be a busy year in Philly sports.

  • January 2023: Eagles Playoffs

The Birds could hold home field advantage for the first time since 2017. A trip to the Super Bowl isnt out of the question. The playoffs should be fun this year.

  • February 9, 2023: NBA Trade Deadline

The Sixers dont have a ton of assets but there is always a team that is willing to dump a veteran for “a future 2nd round pick.” If there is an area of need, the Sixers will look to improve it for the stretch run.

  • February 25, 2023: Union Season Opener

The Union had a heart breaking loss in the MLS Cup. Jim Curtin’s squad will be back and hungry to prove this season that they ARE the best team in the league. They open up on February 25th against the Columbus Crew

  • February 2023: NBA Veteran Buyout Market

The Sixers have struck out in the veteran buyout market the past few years. Veterans who are bought out are looking for two things; an opportunity to win a championship OR starters minutes. If you cant offer either of those then you probably wont get a vet. Clearly veterans didnt think much of the Sixers the past few years BUT with the combo of Harden and Embiid that may change this season.

  • March 3, 2023: NHL Trade Deadline

The Flyers should be sellers. I say SHOULD because Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher lives in a different universe than this one. A universe where the Flyers are actually in a playoff hunt, instead of the hunt for the #1 overall pick. Just a short time ago Fletcher was quoted as bringing up how many points out of a playoff spot the team was.

In reality the Flyers should sell, just like they did last year. The big piece will be Flyers winger James Van Riemsdyk. The Flyers might be able to pry a 1st round pick from a team since teams are always looking for big bodied wingers who pose a net front presence on the power play. Could a team also offer picks for Tony DeAngelo or even Ivan Provorov? Flyers SHOULD be active on the 3rd of March.

  • March 13, 2023: NFL Free Agency

The Eagles are always active in free agency. The Eagles are poised to lose some key contributors in CJ Gardner Johnson, James Bradbury, Javon Hargrave and more. What the Eagles do to fill those vacancies will be interesting.

  • March 16-17, 2023: NCAA Tournament

The first 2 days of the NCAA Tournament is always some of the best sports you will watch all year. Philadelphia has been well represented thanks to Villanova, but this may be the first year in…a while where Philly is left out of the tournament. All of the Big 5 teams have struggled this season and will likely need to win their conference championship in order to punch their ticket.

  • March 30, 2023: Phillies Opening Day

The Phillies will kick off the 2023 season in Arlington Texas as the team takes on the Rangers. They were 2 wins away from winning the World Series, so this should be fun.

  • April, 2023: Sixers Playoffs

The Sixers will ONCE AGAIN look to get out of the second round of the playoffs. Who will they face? What seed will they be? And the biggest question is will Joel Embiid be healthy?

  • April 27-29, 2023: NFL Draft

The NFL draft will take place in April and the Eagles hold 2 first round picks. With holes to fill in the secondary, DL, and others, it will be interesting to see what Howie Roseman does.

  • May 2023: Jalen Hurts Extension

This could happen in May, or June, or July, or not at all. Howie Roseman has a propensity to lock up young players as early as possible. The franchise QB will probably be no different. But Howie may choose to keep Hurts on his rookie deal in order to give the team more cap space.

  • May, 2023: NHL Draft Lottery

While some lucky NHL fans will be focused on their team’s quest for a cup, Flyers fans will be praying to the ping pong ball gods. The Flyers should have great odds at landing Regina Pats forward Conor Bedard. A generational talent that would invigorate life into a lifeless franchise.

  • June 22, 2023: NBA Draft

The Sixers dont have a 1st round pick but they do have a valuable pick. The Sixers currently hold the Hornets 2nd round pick, which should be at the top of the 2nd round. Teams love that pick because it isnt guaranteed. Daryl Morey and Elton Brand have always been active on draft night, and June 22nd shouldnt be any different.

  • June 28-29, 2023: NHL Draft

This is only relevant if the team has the #1 pick. Not like having the 2nd or 3rd pick are bad, but its not Connor Bedard.

  • June 30, 2023: NBA Free Agency

Who will the Sixers add? What will they do?

  • July, 2023: Bryce Harper Return

Harper is set to rejoin the Phillies around the All Star Break. The All Star Game will take place on July 11th and hopefully Harper will be back before then.

  • July 31, 2023: MLB Trade Deadline

This date is actually a guess on my part because last years deadline was August 2nd. But previously it had always been the 31st. So this is assuming its back to being the 31st. The Phillies should once again be buyers at the deadline and it will be interesting to see who they add in their quest for a World Series

  • September 2, 2023: Penn State and Temple Kickoff

Penn State will kick off their season against West Virginia and Temple will start their season against Akron at the Linc. College football will be back!

  • September 10, 2023: Eagles Season Opener

This is a guess on my part since the Eagles could start the season on September 7th, or September 11th. This is assuming the Eagles start the season on a Sunday. And it will be GREAT to have football back in Philly.

  • October 2023: Phillies Playoffs?

Hopefully come October the Phillies will be back to playing playoff baseball. Ready to finish the job they started.

  • October 2023: Sixers Opener

While we dont know the date yet, we know that come mid October the Sixers will be back on the court. Hopefully raising a banner.

  • October 2023: Flyers Opener

If you are a die hard hockey fan than youll be excited. If not, then this is only relevant if the team lands Bedard.

  • November 2023: MLS Cup

Hopefully the Union will be back in the MLS cup and this time they bring it home.

  • November 2023: College Basketball Back

Temple, St Joes, Villanova, Drexel, Penn, and La Salle will all be back on the court.

  • November 2023: NFL Trade Deadline

Right now the NFL Trade Deadline is week 8 but there is a push to move it back to either week 10 or even week 12. That would put the NFL Trade in November and Howie Roseman loves trades.

  • December 2023: The Final Push For The Eagles

Hopefully the team is once again in the drivers seat of the NFC.
