Ramona Shelburne Reports Joel Embiid Is Not Close To Returning
Sixers fans have been waiting patiently for any news, good or bad, about Joel Embiid. Several weeks ago he went down with a meniscus injury. A few weeks after that, he had surgery. We were told he would be evaluated in 4 weeks. But 4 weeks passed, and there was no new news. He talked to the media, said he plans to be back at some point, but there was no timetable. Now thanks to Ramona Shelburne, we have a timetable. On NBA Today, she reported that the Sixers expect him back in the last week of the season.
That does not stray too much from the original 6-8 week timetable from his surgery. He underwent the procedure about 5 weeks ago now. But Sixers fans were likely hoping it would be closer to that 6 weeks, than 8. They wanted to have him back sooner than the final week. Not just so he has more time to ramp up, but because the Sixers badly need him back.
The team has been a disaster without him. Tyrese Maxey is playing as well as he can, but he is not enough. Tobias Harris has been a no-show in many of these games, and the rest of the team just isn’t doing enough.
They have managed to stay in the 6 seed. But they are in danger of falling into the play-in range. There is only .5 a game separating them and the Pacers, and only 1 between them and the Heat. They have a little more wiggle room between them and the 9 seed. But anything in the play-in range is playing with fire.
What is good, is that he does still plan to return. If they can keep their head above water, and Joel Embiid can ramp up in time for the playoffs, they still have a chance. But Embiid’s injury is still a black cloud over a once-promising season.
