Joel Embiid Signs Contract Extension to Stay In Philly Until 2029
Joel Embiid is not going anywhere anytime soon. After a busy offseason for the Sixers where they added Paul George, Caleb Martin, and Andre Drummond, among other names, and extended Tyrese Maxey to a max contract they just put an exclamation point on the off-season by signing the big man to a massive extension. He signed them to a 3-year, $193 million extension, that will keep him in town through the 2028-2029.
Embiid originally signed a 4-year, $213,280,928 contract that would have kept him here from 2023 until 2027. He played in the first year of that deal last season. He will still play on that deal in years 2 and 3, but the final year will be voided, and that is when his next contract will start.
By the end of the deal, he will have made $514.8 million in career earnings. Only Lebron James, Paul George, and Steph Curry have beaten that mark in NBA history.
Joel Embiid Here For The Long Haul
Joel Embiid’s time in Philly has certainly had its ups and downs. He won an MVP and finished in 2nd place for 2 more. He currently has the most points per minute in NBA history. But the team has not had that same level of success. they have put up great regular season records, but the 2nd round is the furthest they have ever gotten.
Injuries have plagued him. Multiple fractured orbital bones. An achilles injury. Tears in his knee and his hand. A concussion. Gastroenteritis. He has had one healthy run in the playoffs, and it was the bubble year where they were without Ben Simmons and got swept by the Celtics in the 1st round.
At times his performance has dipped in the playoffs. He along with James Harden let the team down two years ago vs the Celtics when they lost games 6 and 7. But last year, albiet they went out in the 1st round, he led all players in points per game in the playoffs. Unfortunately, everyone except him and Tyrese Maxey struggled and they eventually fell to the Knicks in 6 games. He was fantastic though, despite being hampered by another injury.
But there is hope this year. They added Paul George to the mix. They also put the pieces around that big 3 that should give them the best-supporting cast Embiid has ever had, though we have heard that before. Now we know that this big 3 will be together for the foreseeable future.
George is here for at least 3 years and has a player op[tion for a 4th. Maxey, like Embiid, is signed through the 2028-2029 season. Embiid will be 35 at the end of the deal. He might get another contract, but with his size and injury history, you never know.
He is on pace to be a Hall of Famer. Championship or not, he will go down as one of the best players in Sixers’ history. He has a chance to be a Sixer for life, something you cannot say about any of the other franchise greats.
We will see how the team Daryl Morey put together pans out. But Embiid being here for the long haul should be celebrated.
