Veteran Guard Reggie Jackson Plans To Sign With Sixers
The Sixers continue to add veteran talent to their backcourt. After already signing Eric Gordon, and resigning Kyle Lowry, they now plan to sign 34-year Reggie Jackson as well after he was bought out by the Charlotte Hornets.
What To Know About Reggie Jackson
Reggie Jackson has spent 13 seasons in the NBA and averaged 12.6 points per game in that time. More recently, he averaged 10.2 points over 22 minutes per game.
Those 3 older veterans join a backcourt that already included Tyrese Maxey and Kelly Oubre Jr, plus the rookie Jared McCain. It seems unlikely McCain sees much consistent time with all these additions, but he will have a lot of older guards to learn from in his first season.
Like Gordon and Lowry, Jackson is joining the Sixers on what will likely be a minimum deal. He is just another experienced guard to throw into that backcourt, who doesn’t cost them very much. We knew with 3 Max Players, the Sixers were going to have to get creative to fill out the roster. Bringing in Vets on minimum deals is a smart way to do that.
Will Reggie Jackson, Kyle Lowry, and Eric Gordon be tremendous players for them? Probably not. Can they fill a role on a team that is overflowing with other star talent? Absolutely.
The Bench has been an issue for the Sixers in the past. Now they have several proven guys coming off the bench. And, as Daryl Morey mentioned when he joined Mid-Days with Bob Cooney, they still have the draft picks and the cap flexibility to keep adding.
They likely did not give KJ Martin that contract to play here. The common thought is that is a move they made to create a tradeable contract. They can still add another player via trade, maybe a Power Forward, using that contract to make the money work.
They have to still do it on the court. But this roster is looking like one of the more dangerous ones they have gone into a season with.
Reggie Jackson previously played with Paul George with the Clippers. He is another guy with a playoff pedigree, having averaged 17.8 points on 40% 3-point shooting for the Clippers in 2021 when they went to the Western Conference Finals. He also won a Championship with the Nuggets in the 2022-2023 season.
