Sixers injury update: Glenn Robinson III (left hip pointer) out for rest of scrimmage vs. Thunder
Sixers wing Glenn Robinson III has a left hip pointer injury and won’t return to the team’s scrimmage Sunday vs. the Thunder.
Robinson collided with the Thunder’s Terrance Ferguson in the second quarter of Sunday’s scrimmage. He stayed in the game after the collision and split a pair of three-point attempts, though he appeared to be in discomfort. In seven minutes, Robinson had seven points, made 2 of 3 threes and grabbed three rebounds.
The Sixers’ final scrimmage before seeding games begin is Tuesday against the Mavericks. Both Joel Embiid (right calf tightness) and Raul Neto (lower back tightness) missed the scrimmage against Oklahoma City.
The 26-year-old Robinson is in the mix to be part of the Sixers’ playoff rotation along with Matisse Thybulle, Furkan Korkmaz and Alec Burks. He joined the Sixers with Burks in a February trade and was looking forward to familiarizing himself with his new team again after the NBA’s hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Leading into the playoffs, I think it’s important for me and Alec as two new guys still around to make sure that we know the offense, make sure we know Brett (Brown’s) calls, his plays … along with our teammates,” he said on July 11. “Ben (Simmons) and (Embiid), we only had a couple games (together) with those guys being out with injuries and things like that. So I’m excited to get on the court with everybody once again and really get in the work.”
Brown liked what he saw from Robinson in the Sixers’ scrimmage against the Grizzlies on Friday, when he had five points, two rebounds and two assists.
“… I thought Glenn, there was a physicality in Glenn on some go-catch-catch-go stuff at the rim that I think that he’s really good at,” Brown said. “I think he’s embraced what I’m calling a go-guy – shots goes up, go get an offensive rebound. I think he was very committed and got rewarded at times for doing that.”
Robinson’s 3-and-D ability would seem to make him a strong candidate for a rotation spot. After missing his first 10 three-point attempts following the trade and expressing some uncertainty over his role, he should now be well-positioned to earn playing time – health permitting.
