Why Do We Play Favorites With Philadelphia Athletes?
The Philadelphia sports fans are the best in the world. It is an honor to work in the best sports city in the world every day. Sports are a part of our culture, and everywhere we go, we have people who care about the local teams. Almost every fan has a favorite player and least favorite player. Where we lose our way a little bit, is with accountability in my opinion.
It is normal to have favorite players and least favorite players, but we should hold all players accountable for failure. Stars get more praise and should get more criticism. Then role players below that, then to the guys who are just hanging on in the league (Stubbs for example) should get the least.
Trea Turner And Bryce Harper Getting A Pass?
Right now, both Trea Turner and Bryce Harper are playing terrible baseball. This is just a slump, and it will pass, but they are both terrible at the moment. Bryce Harper is particularly bad right now and is 1 for his last 30. This is the worst slump of his life. He just went 0-14 against the Yankees. That was his worst series since he has been with the club.
I am 100% sure he will get back to elite status that we are used to. He is baseball Superman and currently he has a bat filled in kryptonite. His greatness is why we should hold him accountable. He is that great. Harper is getting 1% of the heat that other top Philadelphia athletes would get for a slump this big.
Trea Turner’s struggles go completely unnoticed, he gets zero heat. He is 2 for his last 23. If you are looking at the reason the Phillies are currently losing, it is those two guys.
Other Philadelphia Athletes Don’t Get That Treatment
While it is natural to have favorite players, if Jalen Hurts played at Harper or Turner’s current level the heat on him would be as hot as the sun. People are already questioning him, which is fine, but let’s keep that same energy for all the stars in this city.
Joel Embiid has never had a slump this bad in his career and fans are much tougher on him. I understand that he has been injured, but he also has been great at times. And again, he has never had the equivalent to 1-30.
I believe in Bryce Harper, I believe in Trea Turner, I believe in Joel Embiid, I believe in Jalen Hurts. That belief is because they have proven to be great players. I think we need to be a little fairer about who we rip and who we don’t rip when these guys struggle.
