The series heads up to New York with the Phillies and Mets tied up at 1-1. The Phillies are sending out Aaron Nola, and you can see how he has pitched against the Mets below. Meanwhile, it will be Sean Manaea on the mound for the Mets.

Sean Manaea has faced the Phillies 6 times in his career. One of those times came with the Athletics way back in 2017 when this was a completely different team. The other 5 all came in the past two seasons. In those 5 games he has an ERA of 6.0.

Two came last season out of the bullpen with the Giants. There he combined for 4 runs across 4 innings of work. This season he started against them 3 times though. His 1st time out he did well, holding the Phillies to just 1 run across 6 innings. But the next time out he coughed up 6 in 3.2 innings. More recently, he pitched 7 innings and gave up 3 runs. So it is a bit shaky for him. Sometimes he has done fine, but in other games the Phillies had his number.

It has overall been a decent season for him. He made 32 starts, and finished with a 3.47 ERA. He made 1 star in the Wild Card series and held the Brewers to 2 runs across 5 innings. One thing to watch is he has had a slight HR problem at home. He gave up 14 HRs in 16 starts at Citi Field, compared to just 7 in games anywhere else.

How has he pitched against the individual hitters in this lineup though? Find out below.

  • Trea Turner- .313/.313/.500/.813- 2 RBIs, 0 BBs, 1 HR, 4 Ks in 16 ABs
  • Bryce Harper- .364/.364/.818/1.182- 2 RBIs, 0 BBs, 1 HR, 2 2Bs, 2 Ks in 11 ABs
  • Alec Bohm- .200/.182/.500/.682- 2 RBIs, 0 BBs, 1 HR, 3 Ks in 10 ABs
  • Nick Castellanos-.375/.375/1.000/1.375- 4 RBIs, 0 BBs, 2 HRs, 1 2B, 4 Ks, in 16 ABs
  • JT Realmuto- .143/.250/.143/.393 0 RBIs, 1 BB, 0 HRs, 4 Ks, in 7 ABs
  • Brandon Marsh- .000/.250/.000/.250- 0 RBIs, 1 BB, 0 HRs, 2 Ks in 3 ABs
  • Bryson Stott- ..429/.556/.857/1.413- 2 RBIs, 2 BBs, 1 HR, 1 K in 7 ABs
  • Johan Rojas- .000/.000/.000/.000- 0 RBIs, 0 BBs, 0 HRs, 1 K, in 5 ABs
  • Austin Hays-.667/.667/1.667/2.333- 1 RBI, 0 BBs, 1 HR, 0 Ks in 3 ABs
  • Kody Clemens- .000/.000/.000/.000- 0 RBIs, 0 BBs, 0 HRs, 0 K, in 1 AB

The sample sizes are pretty small. Only 4 guys have faced him at least 10 times, and no one has seen him 20 times. So we can only draw so much form these numbers.

But in those small sample sizes, several guys have had a lot of success against him. As a team they hit .309/.346/.680/1.027 against him. 5 Guys have an OPS over 1.000 against him. The top of the lineup in particular hits him hard.

It is a matchup that favors them. they have gotten to him in the past. The bats seem to wake up in game 2. The Phillies bats have the chance to set the tone early, give Aaron Nola some cushion, to hopefully get up 2-1 in this series. Whether or not it plays out that way remains to be seen.

The Philadelphia Phillies began the MLB Playoffs in 2023 the same way they did in 2022.

While they didn’t win the National League East, they look primed for a hot streak in the new playoff format with six bids in each league.

The 2023 Phillies

It looked like history would repeat itself with a wild card team reaching the World Series. Except this time, the Phillies wouldn’t be the surprise underdogs against a team powerhouse like the Houston Astros.

Dave Dombrowski had added Trea Turner to an already stacked lineup. The high-priced shortstop finally came around offensively late in the 2023 regular season, and the World Series experience in 2022 made the Phillies a popular title pick locally and nationally.

The Red October crowd resumed the wrath that opponents felt during the miracle ride in 2022.

The Miami Marlins, Atlanta Braves, and the Arizona Diamondbacks stood in their way.
