It will be Phillies vs Mets in the NLDS, with game 1 coming up on Saturday night. We know it will be Zack Wheeler for the Phillies, and you can see how he has pitched against the Mets below. But for the Mets it will be Kodai Senga, who has missed nearly the entire season with an injury. Senga will make his 2nd start of the year in game 1.

The Mets are in a bit of a pickle. They had to play a doubleheader on Monday, then had to play 3 games vs the Brewers. They also used David Peterson out of the pen in game 3 Thursday night. Meanwhile, the Phillies had the week off to set up their rotation exactly as they please.

So they will turn to a guy who was supposed to be one of the Aces on this staff. Kodai Senga. Senga had a tremendous rookie season in 2022. He had an ERA of 2.98 across 29 starts. People expected him to take the next step this year. But a calf injury derailed his season.

He is not fully stretched out, so it is unclear how deep he will be able to go. He may hand it off to Tylor Megill early. But having not pitched since July, and having thrown just 5.1 innings all season, it is tough to see him going deep into the game.

Senga has only faced the Phillies twice, both coming last season, and had a sparkling 1.46 ERA in 12.1 innings. He shut them out across 7 innings with only 1 hit the first time. The next time they got to him a bit, scoring 4 runs (2 earned) in 5.1 innings.

Obviously not a large sample size for any of them. And judging by how limited Senga will be, the guys at the end of the lineup might not even get to face him. It could just be 1 inning, and then he passes the baton to someone else.

The Philadelphia Phillies began the MLB Playoffs in 2023 the same way they did in 2022.

While they didn’t win the National League East, they look primed for a hot streak in the new playoff format with six bids in each league.

The 2023 Phillies

It looked like history would repeat itself with a wild card team reaching the World Series. Except this time, the Phillies wouldn’t be the surprise underdogs against a team powerhouse like the Houston Astros.

Dave Dombrowski had added Trea Turner to an already stacked lineup. The high-priced shortstop finally came around offensively late in the 2023 regular season, and the World Series experience in 2022 made the Phillies a popular title pick locally and nationally.

The Red October crowd resumed the wrath that opponents felt during the miracle ride in 2022.

The Miami Marlins, Atlanta Braves, and the Arizona Diamondbacks stood in their way.
