Trea Turner Absolutely Earned The All-Star Nod Over Lindor
Since it was announced that Trea Turner would be the Starting Shortstop for the NL there has been a lot of crying. Specifically from Mets fans. They were up in arms that their SS, Fransico Lindor, was”snubbed” claiming that Turner only got in because of the popular vote.
For one, that is what the All-Star game is. It is for players the fans want to see play. If you don’t like it, maybe your fans should have voted more. Lindor didn’t even finish in the final 2. If you are going to be mad at anyone, blame your fanbase.
But also, the voters got it right. Turner has been MUCH better than Lindor. It’s not even close. Apart from missing over a month of games, Turner has been one of the best hitters in the league period. Lindor is having a good season, nut they arent in the same stratosphere.
Trea Turner Has Simply Been Better
Mets fans will point to the counting stats to say Lindor has been the better player. Turner missed several weeks. Of course he is going to have fewer HRs, RBIs, Steals, etc than a guy who played 38 more games than him. But let’s look at the two player’s slash lines instead.
Trea Turner- .342/.387/.516/.903
Francisco Lindor- .253/.321/.455/.776
Only 11 players have a higher OPS than Turner this season. Only 1 player has a higher batting average. Only 12 players have a higher SLG. He leads NL Shortstops in every slash line category. He technically doesn’t have enough at-bats to qualify right now, but when healthy he has been flat-out elite. Just look what he did to the Dodgers.
But let’s even take those counting stats. In 52 games he has 8 HRs, 44 runs, 11 steals, and 14 doubles. Over a full slate of 91 games to this point, that would equal 14 HRs, 77 runs, 19 steals, and 26 doubles. Lindor has 16 HRs, 61 runs, 16 steals, and 26 doubles. They are pretty much even in those counting stats. But the real difference comes in 93 hits for Lindor, against a projected 132 for Turner.
Over a full season, Turner would be on track for 25 HRs, 34 steals, 137 runs, and 234 hits.
For those who love WAR, Trea Turner would have a 4.2 WAR over 91 games, compared to Lindor at 3.2. A full run better than Lindor. So even the sabermetrics can’t save you Mets fans.
Honestly, if you look at the numbers on a per-game basis, you could even make the argument Edmundo Sosa has been better than Lindor. Sosa’s slash line of .273/.333/.466/.799 is better than Lindor’s across the board. And for those WAR lovers, he is projected to have a WAR of 3.9 over 91 games.
That may be taking it a bit far, and obviously if you had the choice between Sosa and Lindor, I would take Lindor. But I just thought it make Mets fans even madder if I pointed that out.
No Argument For Francisco Lindor
There is no argument for Lindor over Turner. Mookie Betts would be the next guy, even though he is also hurt. If you say neither deserves it because they missed time, then it would go to Elly De La Cruz. Lindor has the 4th best numbers among NL Shortstops.
Elly De La Cruz you could make a convincing argument for. A shaky one, but if you are someone who thinks injuries should keep players out, you can argue it. Suggesting Lindor should be the All-Star over Turner is laughable though. Only Mets fans would try to make that argument.
