Bryce Harper Wins NL Player Of The Month For 2nd Straight Time
Bryce Harper may be on the shelf for now, but he is also getting some extra hardware to put up on that shelf with him. For the 2nd straight month, Bryce Harper has been named the NL Player Of The Month. But this time, he has company, because Cristopher Sanchez won NL Pitcher of The Month for the 1st time in his career.
Bryce Harper Is NL Player Of The Month
As great as Bryce Harper was in May, he was even better in June. His slash line went from .313/.407/.583/.990 to .374/.452/.714/1.166. He hit 7 HRs in both months but doubled his doubles from 5 to 10.
That batting average was the 4th best in the league, and 2nd best in the NL. The SLG% and OPS only trailed Aaron Judge, who had the best stretch perhaps in MLB history.
He had a health scare to close out June, but it seems to be minor. He is already running after pulling his hamstring and could return early next week. Once he is back, he will have the chance to continue what could be his 3rd MVP campaign, and his 2nd with the Phillies. Though he will have to contend with Shohei Ohtani for that. That said, he already beat him out for NL Player of the Month twice this season.
Cristopher Sanchez Is NL Pitcher Of The Month
Harper is not the only Phillies player getting recognized though. The Phillies swept the June awards, with Cristopher Sanchez also taking home the NL Pitcher of the Month.
Sanchez went from being a good pitcher to looking like an Ace in June. He had 5 starts and pitched 33 innings to an ERA of 1.64. Only 6 earned runs the entire month. 4 came in 1 shaky start. Across the other 4 starts, he pitched 29 innings with only 2 earned runs, including a complete-game shutout his last time out.
Suddenly he has the 5th best ERA in the NL, and 3rd best in the NL. His ERA is down to 2.41 on the season.
We were talking about the Phillies 3 Aces in Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and Ranger Suarez. But it might actually be the 4 Aces 2.0. Except this time, unlike Roy Oswalt, Sanchez is actually carrying his weight, and arguably outperforming some of his fellow starters.
A Sign of Just How Good The Phillies Are
So now the Phillies have won 2 out of the 3 NL Player of The Month awards, and 2 out of the 3 NL Pitchers of the Month, with Ranger Suarez winning it in April. It seems they have elite-level talent both at the plate and on the mound.
Harper currently has the 3rd best odds to win MVP, while Wheeler is the favorite to win Cy Young. Ranger Suarez has the 3rd best odds.
Trea Turner might already be on his way to winning NL Player Of The Month in July with a 3 for 5, 2 HR night to open up the Month. Had he not missed as much time as he did, he might be in the running for MVP too. As of now, they could have as many as 8 players in the All-Star game, with 3 projected to be starters.
This team is doing something special. Bryce Harper and Cristopher Sanchez winning these awards is just the latest sign of that.
Despite all the injuries, they still have a 2-game lead over the rest of the league, a 3.5-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL, and a 9-game lead over the Braves for the NL East. We are halfway through the season, and despite several hurdles, they have shown no signs of slowing down.
