Why Joel Embiid Keeps Getting Booed At The Olympics
For the 1st time in his career, Joel Embiid is playing at the Olympics. He chose to represent Team USA, as opposed to Team Cameroon or Team France, both of whom he could have been eligible to play for.
If you have been watching Team USA play, you may notice the mostly French crowds are not exactly thrilled with the Sixers big man. So why are the French fans booing Joel Embiid?
France Feels Snubbed By Joel Embiid
There was a time when it looked like Joel Embiid would play for France. They even granted him citizenship back in 2022 so that he would be eligible. But then he chose Team USA instead, and French fans did not take it well. In fact, you could say they are still taking it quite poorly.
Despite Joel Embiid having never lived in France, they felt somehow entitled to him. You will see people from France saying he betrayed them, or that he just took the easy way out to play for Team USA. A common jab has been that he is medal chasing.

Never mind the fact that he has lived in the USA for over half his life now, or that his wife is from here, and his son was born here. The USA is the place where Embiid became one of the best basketball players in the world. No none of that matters. He should play for the country that colonized his actual home country 100 years ago.
Embiid has said that if Cameroon qualified, he would have played for them. That was the dream. But they went out early in the qualifiers. If he wanted to play in the Olympics his choices are a country he has lived in for 15 years, or a place he has never lived.
Embiid chose to play for a country he actually has a connection to. But no one ever mistook the French fans for being reasonable. Because Embiid played for the Country he lives in instead of a place that he can actually call home, they are going to keep booing him anytime he touches the ball.
