Is Kyle Lowry The Right Answer For the Sixers At PG?
Kyle Lowry has been involved in Sixers speculation for years. His local connection, and his time at Villanova, along with being a great player in his prime, made him someone Philly fans coveted. Last year that finally came to fruition. Lowry found himself as a veteran buyout candidate, and he came to Philly.
In some ways, it worked out for them. He was clearly not the player he once was. That said, he was a great veteran presence and gave them another playmaker.
Now he is back for another season. A couple weeks into free agency, Kyle Lowry signed a 1-year deal to return to the Sixers, and likely be the point guard off the bench. Was this the right move though? Bob Cooney shared his thoughts on Mid-Days With Bob Cooney the next day.
Here Is What Bob Cooney Thought of The Kyle Lowry Signing
First off, Bob was excited about what Kyle Lowry could provide as a leader off of the court.
“Off the court stuff, how to handle yourself during the season, all of that is great. It is great for the rookies to watch someone like Kyle Lowry handle himself. Jared McCain I am sure could learn many things from Lowry.”
That said, Bob Conney did have some reservations about the signing on the court. He said he is fine with him coming off the bench, and playing limited minutes, maybe even starting here and there if there is an injury. But where he would become worried is if they went into the season relying on him to contribute on the floor.
“To be relying on him to make this a better basketball team on the floor consistently, that is not good for me. There are spot times to use him, not to use him a lot.
Kyle Lowry scored 0 points with 8 assists over 39 minutes in the final 2 games vs the Knicks last season. He took just 6 shots. It is clear he is not the type of guy you can expect big minutes from any ore. He just doesn’t have the legs.
But as Bob said, off the bench, playing limited minutes, he can help you. He was a cheap option, and they did need someone off the bench who can pass the ball. Having him around is likely a good thing. Just don’t expect him to make a huge impact on the floor.
The point guard position is still not solved though. It might not be fixed until we get into the season. If they are relying on Kyle Lowry to be the PG come playoff time, there will be a problem
