Andre Drummond Returns To Sixers On A 2-Year Deal
The best backup Joel Embiid has ever played with was Andre Drummond. He only spent half of a season in Philly though, before he was packaged with Ben Simmons and Seth Curry in the James Harden deal. Since then, the Sixers have gone through several backups in 3 seasons. None came close to matching what Drummond did for them.
Now the two sides will reunite. Andre Drummond is back in Philly after signing a 2-year $10 million deal to backup Joel Embiid.
Andre Drummond Solidifies The Backup Center Position For The Sixers
The 30-year-old averaged 8.4 points, and 9.0 rebounds over 17.1 minutes per game with the Bulls last season. Over his career, he averages 12.4 rebounds per game. Rebounds were a major issue for the Sixers in the playoffs last year. Drummond will certainly go a long way to fixing that.
He does not offer a ton a s scorer, but he is more than capable of cleaning up offensive boards or finishing easy plays inside. He should also offer a lot more on defense than any of the backup bigs did last season.
Last season they relied on Paul Reed and Mo Bamba to backup Embiid. Both left a lot to be desired. The Sixers often fell apart anytime Embiid came off the floor, especially in the playoffs against the Knicks. In Drummond, they should now have a steady presence to spell Embiid. One who is maybe good enough to give Embiid extra time during the long regular season slog.

The question is what does this mean for Paul Reed? He is owed $7.7 million next season, but none of it is guaranteed. The Sixers now have a cheaper, and better option in Andre Drummond. With more moves expected to come from the Sixers, it is easy to see Reed being a cap casualty and being released just a year after signing a 3-year deal with the Sixers.
The Sixers also have rookie Adem Bona. But in his first season, it is unlikely he will play a huge role this season. If anything, he will be the 3rd center behind Joel Embiid and Andre Drummond.
