We Should Embrace Joel Embiid Playing In The 2024 Olympics
There is a new fringe sentiment around the city of Philadelphia suggesting that Joel Embiid shouldn’t take advantage of the rare opportunity to play in the Olympics this summer. I don’t understand where this thought process comes from, but I do not think it is based on common sense.
Just so it is clear, Embiid is going to the Olympics to play basketball. He is not going to participating in any other sport than the one he plays for a living. Embiid will be playing basketball this offseason regardless of the venue. Saying that he shouldn’t play in the Olympics is really saying that they prefer Embiid not have the best offseason possible.
Joel Embiid Has Enough Time To Heal
We all know that Embiid missed time and was hampered in the postseason after he tore his meniscus. The Sixers last game was May 2nd. The Olympics begin on July 26th. That gives Embiid 85 days to further heal.
That is more than enough time to be rested to play with and against the best players in the world. It is not like if Embiid stayed home, his basketball work would stop. He would still be working out, and working on his game, but with players who aren’t as good.
Olympics Gives Joel Embiid A Chance To Play With Champions
Pending this year’s NBA championship, Embiid would practice with and against 6 champions and be coached by 3 coaches who have won at least 1 title. If you are a Sixers fan, why would you want Embiid working out with “nice” players when he could be around Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Jrue Holiday, Lebron James, and Kawhi Leonard?
Those guys all have championships. Isn’t that what we want here in Philadelphia? If you believe steel sharpens steel, that feels like some very good steel. He can’t duplicate that at home. It is the only way for him to get this level of work.
Do we feel he couldn’t learn from Steve Kerr, Tyronn Lue, and Erik Spoelstra? They are 3 of the 4 coaches along with Mark Few. Injuries can happen at any time. That goes triple for Embiid, I would rather him get the high-quality work because he is just as likely to get hurt here as in Paris.
Why Joel Embiid Picked Team USA
This also ignores the fact that it is an honor be named to that team, and he recently worked hard to become an American citizen. That is something that shouldn’t be dismissed.
Embiid didn’t have to become a citizen. He chose to become one in part because his son Arthur is an American. Who are we to suggest he not go play for Team USA without 1st hand knowledge that it isn’t important to him?
On almost any topic, reasonable people can disagree. On this one, I don’t think it is reasonable. We should be excited about the summer Joel Embiid is about to have because it will make him a better player. A better Joel Embiid equals a better 76ers team in 24-25.
