The Jaden Springer Trade Is Way Worse Than The Pat Bev One

Sixers Twitter is up in arms right now over a trade. they are not happy that Pat Beverley was traded to the Bucks. But at least in that trade, they got a guy who can hit a 3 back. And with Embiid out for at least 4 weeks, likely more, they needed to add more offense. But there is a trade that is far more worth a fan’s ire than the Pat Bev one. Jaden Springer. The Sixers flipped him for a 2nd round pick.  They didn’t get a player back. Just a 2nd round pick.

It makes no sense. They weren’t in danger of losing him. Springer is under contract until 2026, and then he is a restricted free agent. Trading him doesn’t clear up cap space. He is making under $3 million. What do they gain by trading him?

With Pat Bev gone, Springer had the chance to step up and fill that role as the perimeter defender off the bench. Now it is unclear who will fill that role. They gave up a player with an emerging skill set on defense and got nothing that will help them anytime soon back.

Is Springer a star? No. He may never be a guy who can play serious minutes. His offensive game needs serious work, and until he fixes it he won’t be a playoff player. But there is a skillset there to build on. He has the chance to be a great defensive player. Why not hold onto him to see what he can grow into?

Is it a move that will kill the team? No. He wasn’t a guy who got many minutes right now. But selling low on him is an odd decision. Especially with your rival. So if he does grow into a real player, they get to benefit while you have a 2nd round pick? You used a first-round pick on him. And a few years later, without him really getting a chance, you pawn him off for a 2nd. There is no way to frame that except for being a failure.

The Pat Bev trade I can get my head around. You at least improved your 3-point shooting there. The Buddy Hield trade was great for them. But this move, however minor it may be, makes no sense.

  Another move people did not really see coming. The Sixers have traded Jaden Springer to the Celtics for a 2nd round pick. They have now traded 4 2nd rounders but gotten back 2 more. but it is weird that they traded him away after trading to Pat Bev. Jaden Springer was their next-best option for perimeter defense. And it seemed Pat Bev being traded would be a chance for him to step up. Now its unclear who their primary perimeter defender off the bench will be.

• Pat Bev Traded to The Bucks For Cam Payne

  In a slightly shocking move, Pat Bev is on the move. The Sixers sent him to the Bucks, and in exchange received Cam Payne, and a 2nd round pick. The pick helps restock the shelves after already trading 4 of them today. And Cam Payne is another upgrade for the Sixers shooting 3s. But they will lose the leadership and toughness Pat Bev brought. We will see if the trade-off is worth it. If they do get Kyle Lowry though, he kind of replaces what Pat Bev gave them.

• Sixers Trade For Buddy Hield

  Their first move was to bring in Buddy Hield. They sent Marcus Morris, Furkan Korkmaz, and 3 2nd round picks to the Pacers in exchange for the 8th-year shooting guard. Hield gives them a guy who can fill it up from 3  off the bench. He is on an expiring contract, so the move won’t affect their cap space next season.

• Sixers Trade Danuel House To Open Up Cap Space

  Their next move was to clear up cap space. They sent Danuel House and a 2nd round pick to the Pistons. In exchange, they opened up some cap space they could use to add a player during the buyout period. And Keith Pompey even mentioned that Kyle Lowry could be a target for the Sixers.

• Woj Thinks They Will Look At Andre Drummond or Kelly Olynk

  This is from earlier in the week, but it is still relevant today. Woj thinks the Sixers will be looking for a center. He specifically mentions Andre Drummond and Kelly Olynk. And that is certainly a need while Embiid is out. And having one of them as Embiid’s backup once he is back will be nice as well.

• Conflicting Reports on Demar Derozan

  NBA reporters cant seem to agree if the Sixers would have any interest in Demar Derozan. Many guys local and National have said they don’t see him going to the Sixers. But Woj seems to think they would. And said this on his podcast.

  “DeMar DeRozan is a player [the 76ers] have talked about. Maybe not so much today, but in previous days. I think it’s harder for Chicago to do some of these deals with contending teams because they want players back. They’re not looking to get draft assets and expiring.”

  But if that is the case, the Sixers don’t fit that bill. They can’t offer young players, they only have draft picks to offer. And DeRozan’s fit with Embiid is questionable too. Both of them love to shoot from the same parts of the floor. While he would certainly be a player capable of keeping them afloat. It does not seem like the ideal move for them to make. But there are plenty of people around the NBA saying they think the Sixers should trade for him.

• Sixers Wanted Bojan Bogdanovic, Didnt Have The Ammo

  Bojan Bogdanovic would have been perfect for the Sixers. Instead, he went to the Knicks. As Paul Hudrick from Liberty Ballers points out below, it came down to the Sixers not having a player to headline the deal. All the Sixers have are picks. So any team that wants a good young player back may not have any interest in the type of package the Sixers can offer.

• Dejounte Murray Staying in Atlanta?

  Murray has been a name Sixers fans threw around a lot. But the Sixers themselves have not been connected to him much. And now it seems like he may be staying put. The Pelicans reportedly were into deep conversations, but the deal fell apart. And as of now, it does not seem like anything else will happen.

• Sixers Still in on Drummond, Out on DeRozan

  The latest on Drummond is that they are still in on him, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. Fischer also says the Sixers are not pursuing Demar DeRozan. which makes sense for all the reasons we mentioned before. DeRozan is not a natural fit with Embiid on the court.

• Andre Drummond Not Getting Traded

  The trade deadline has passed. And while trades still trickle out after the fact, we know Drummond will not be one of them. Chris Haynes confirmed that Andre Drummond will not be moved. It looks like the Sixers will stick with what they have at backup center, outside of any potential buyouts.
