Derek Barnett Is Still Doing Dumb Things At Eagles Camp
Derek Barnett #96 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks on against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the preseason game at Lincoln Financial Field on August 12, 2021 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Derek Barnett has never lived up to being a first-round pick during his time in Philly. His rookie year showed promise with 5 sacks, as well as a key sack in the NFC Championship game vs the Vikings. And to his credit, he was the guy who fell on Tom Brady’s fumble in the Super Bowl. But along with a lack of production, his time here has been defined by stupid mistakes. Untimely penalties became a trend for him. late hits, illegal hits. It feels like he constantly was getting called for penalties. And sometimes those penalties turned a stop into a fresh set of downs for the other team.
He missed last year after he tore his ACL. And while his place on the roster is probably safe this year due to the large dead cap hit, he is still coming into camp with a ton to prove. Not just that he can be a productive player, but that he won’t keep doing dumb stuff on the field.
Unfortunately, he is already getting attention for the wrong reasons again. During practice, while they were running a WR Screen, Landon Dickerson blocked Derek Barnett into the ground. Cheap shot from Derek Barnett on Landon Dickerson after a WR screen to Brown.
Dickerson knocked Barnett down on a bit of a blind side block during play. Barnett retaliated, shoving Dickerson to the ground from behind.

These types of things happen in camp. And usually, it would not be worth noting except in passing. But when Derek Barnett is at the center of it, it is going to get some attention. He already has a reputation for doing stuff like this. Not just in practice, but in games, where it costs his team downs and yards. And you can’t help but think this is a sign that he will just get up to his same old antics should he actually get any playing time among a very deep rotation for Edge Rushers.

8 Things We Learned From the Eagles Open Practice on Sunday
Football is so close. The Open Practice over the weekend is a true sign of that. This week the Eagles will play their first Pre-Season game. Then in just a few weeks, we will have real Football. And there is good reason to be excited for the Eagles this year. This team made it all the way to the Super Bowl last year, and at least the offense looks very similar. Jalen Hurts is back, with a new contract. Both AJ Brown and Devonta Smith are back. And The Eagle’s offensive line, apart from Isaac Seumalo, are all back. The only major change is swapping out Miles Sanders for D’Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny.
But the defense may look very different. Both starting Safeties and Linebackers left in free agency. Javon Hargrave left too. Not to mention there is a new Defensive Coordinator in Sean Desai. There are a of new faces to fill in those holes though. Like rookies Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, and Sydney Brown. Plus they expect second-year guys like Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean to step into much larger roles.
On Sunday, Eagles fans got their first look at the new look Eagles, albeit not a complete one. Teams never show everything in these open practices. It is a show for fans more than it is a real chance for the Eagles to try things. They tend to be a bit secretive and hold things back. But that does not mean there is nothing to learn from them.
So what did we learn on Sunday? Did we get some insight into who might win the various camp battles? Were there any players who stood out for what they did on the field?
Here are 8 of the biggest takeaways from Sundays Open Practice for the Eagles:
