Phillies All-Star Break Check-In: Bench Players
The Philadelphia Phillies reached the MLB All-Star Break with the best record in baseball at 62-34 (.646). They lead the National League East by 8.5 games over the second-place Atlanta Braves.
97.5 The Fanatic will analyze the four key elements of the team at the All-Star Break and their chances to win a World Series.

The Roster’s Weak Link?
The starting rotation has carried the Phillies in 2024. The offense has impressively withstood injuries to remain toward the top of the league. The defense has shown significant improvement, and the bullpen looks poised for another run in Red October.
The bench hasn’t come together like the other units have.
Dave Dombrowski swallowed his pride and admitted an $8 million mistake when the Phillies released Whit Merrifield on July 12. The addition of the former All-Star was supposed to give Rob Thomson an option to platoon with Brandon Marsh and a utility man to rack up innings in a variety of roles.
Merrifield’s .199 batting average had a trickle-down effect on the bench during the early months of the season. He didn’t earn extra at-bats despite IL stints for five lineup regulars.
He pushed David Dahl, Kody Clemens, and now Weston Wilson into more action than the Phillies would’ve expected entering the season. The three respective players along with Cristian Pache still have varying odds of earning a bench spot during Red October.
However, Thomson doesn’t seem to have found a rhythm and fully determined his level of trust in his reserves.
Backup Catchers
J.T. Realmuto underwent right knee meniscectomy surgery on June 12. His IL stint forced the often-injured Rafael Marchan onto the major league roster.
Marchan and Garrett Stubbs have each played 17 games in Realmuto’s absence. Both backup catchers have shown flashes of good defense, but Marchan has superior physical tools behind the plate. He’s also outperformed Stubbs offensively by a wide margin since the call-up.
Games | Batting Average | OPS | Home Runs | RBI | Extra-Base Hits | |
Garrett Stubbs | 17 | .196 | .518 | 1 | 3 | 2 |
Rafael Marchan | 17 | .294 | .894 | 3 | 6 | 7 |
Will the Phillies keep Rafael Marchan on the active MLB roster when Realmuto returns? Probably not.
Garrett Stubbs has developed a reputation as a beloved clubhouse presence, and the 2024 Phillies have collectively hammered the point home about the importance of their clubhouse atmosphere.
“When you’re on a team that has those playoffs, World Series expectations, the games are pressure enough as it is… If you’re in a tight clubhouse, you feel like there’s never time to get a release, let loose, and to have that ability to do that just allows you to loosen up a little bit for the game. It allows you to play better.” –Joe Blanton on 97.5 The Fanatic
Matt Gelb suspects that Marchan’s emergence means more for a potential backup catcher role in 2025 than it does for his chances to unseat Stubbs in 2024 (for better or for worse).
The Playoff Bench
The Phillies will likely carry four bench players during the postseason. Edmundo Sosa has proven himself as a reliable utility infielder with a solid bat when needed. The backup catcher spot will probably go to Stubbs.
Dombrowski will likely trade for a right-handed outfielder to cover his mistake with Merrifield. Brandon Marsh has shown a critical weakness against left-handed pitching.
A platoon option would make sense to complement Marsh in left field and possibly push him to center if Johan Rojas struggles at the plate.
Lane Thomas of the Washington Nationals and Taylor Ward of the Los Angeles Angels look like logical candidates.
Cristian Pache has hung onto his roster spot the past two seasons despite minimal offensive production. Teams in World Series contention don’t have the margin for error to wait for players on the active roster to reach their full potential.
It’s possible that Clemens or Wilson overtakes him. The Phillies could also theoretically bring back Dahl for some pop as a pinch hitter.
The organization has emphasized the motivation stemming from their heartbreaking NLCS loss in 2023, so they undoubtedly remember that Jake Cave made the final out of Game 7 as a pinch hitter.
Expect them to take the final roster spot seriously, possibly even with a trade for a veteran hoping for just one moment with the type of key at-bat that could’ve made the difference last year.
