Phillies MLB Trade Deadline Candidates: Tommy Pham
The Philadelphia Phillies solidified their spot in the top tier of MLB teams with a hot start. They entered the season with World Series expectations despite a relatively slow offseason.
Dave Dombrowski showed confidence in the current makeup of the group by keeping his core pieces together with no major additions to the starting lineup.
What does the relatively slow strategy and the high demands from Philadelphia fans mean for the Phillies ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline?
This is a big market team operating on a hefty budget trying to take advantage of a window for World Series contention. Expect Dombrowski to make some deals.

Tommy Pham
The lowly Chicago White Sox limped out of Citizens Bank Park in mid April. The playoffs seemed like an outlandish dream after the Phillies completed a three-game sweep by a combined 24-7 score.
However, they had signed a 36-year-old outfielder just three days before the series began. Tommy Pham didn’t find any suitors in free agency, but he joined his eighth MLB team in 11 seasons on April 16.
Pham hit 16 home runs and stole 22 bases with the New York Mets and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023. He finished the regular season with a .774 OPS, and he earned himself a spot in the lineup during Arizona’s run to the National League pennant.
The veteran righty hit .279 in 16 postseason games. His home run in Game 6 of the NLCS played a part in one of the most stunning two-day periods in Phillies history.
The White Sox won’t send Pham to become a key slugger for a World Series contender. However, he could be useful as a veteran journeyman looking for a playoff push late in his career.
Pham’s passion persists on a last-place team. It spilled over when William Contreras showed him up after a play at home plate on June 2.
“I’ll never start anything, but I’ll be prepared to finish it.” -Tommy Pham
Phillies Looking For Outfielders?
While the Phillies stormed out of the gates, Nick Castellanos struggled to begin the 2024 season. He ranked in the bottom tier of qualified MLB hitters in most categories through the month of May.
Johan Rojas began the season in the lineup because of his glove. He didn’t flash the leather enough to force the Phillies to keep him on the major league roster through June.
Brandon Marsh has provided serviceable offense when healthy in somewhat of a platoon role in the first half of the season. He hit .290 against right-handers and .135 against left-handers in his first 52 games in 2024.
Will the Phillies wait for Castellanos to bust out of his slump? Will they look to bolster their outfield offense with another bat to split time with Marsh?
Is Tommy Pham A Fit?
Todd Zolecki spoke on 97.5 The Fanatic about the possibility of Dave Dombrowski pursuing the apparent need ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline.
“I think that’s possible. If you think of like a right-handed bat, maybe. Maybe they want a center fielder… Maybe a little bit more offense.” -Todd Zolecki
Pham might make sense if the Phillies have lost faith in Whit Merrifield as a replacement option.
Merrifield has struggled to contribute in his first season with the Phillies at age 35. If the Phillies have lost in faith in him as a rotational contributor, Pham brings similar strengths with MLB experience and a track record of success.
However, Pham isn’t the type of player who should be at the top of Dombrowski’s list in the weeks leading up to July 30.
The Phillies will explore other upgrades on the market. The White Sox could also potentially trade Luis Robert Jr. during their disastrous 2024 season. The Los Angeles Angels might unload Taylor Ward, and Kyle Tucker should be the apple of any MLB team’s eye.
Bob Nightengale pointed out on Philly Sports Tonight that the Phillies have passed on multiple opportunities to acquire Tommy Pham in recent seasons. They’re unlikely to change their outlook for an underwhelming addition at the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline.
Praising the current makeup of the Phillies clubhouse has become a point of emphasis internally and externally. They’ll look to improve the lineup, not add a veteran presence that isn’t lacking on a first-place team.
Dave Dombrowski will have to further determine his expectations for Castellanos as a postseason hitter and evaluate Marsh’s ability to face left-handed pitching. His evaluations will factor into the possible pursuit of Luis Robert Jr. or another more threatening bat in the outfield.
