97.5 The Fanatic Flyers Roundup: Owen Tippett Extension, Carter Hart, Alumni Weekend
Beyond the news of an extension for Owen Tippett, the Flyers now face their greatest adversity of the 2023-24 season. A four-game losing streak, the threat of rising division opponents, and the absence of two key players have made the outlook on John Tortorella and an overachieving roster as negative as it’s been this season. How will they respond?
- Saturday 1/20: Colorado Avalanche 7, Flyers 4
- Sunday 1/21: Ottawa Senators 5, Flyers 3
- Tuesday 1/23: Tampa Bay Lightning 6, Flyers 3
- Thursday 1/25: Detroit Red Wings 3, Flyers 0
Carter Hart, Hockey Canada
The Flyers announced on Tuesday that they’ve granted an indefinite leave of absence to Carter Hart for personal reasons.
Hart won a gold medal for Team Canada at the World Juniors in 2018. The Globe and Mail reported that London, Ontario police have told five members of the team to surrender and face charges of sexual assault. Four other members of the team have also been granted a leave of absence from their professional teams.
Danny Briere declined to comment further on the serious legal matter.
Flyers Alumni Game
The golden anniversary of the 1974 Stanley Cup team will highlight Flyers Alumni Weekend. The Broad Street Bullies defeated the Bruins to become the first expansion team to lift the Cup in ’74, and the two storied franchises will send alumni teams on the ice on Friday 1/26. Tickets are still available, and all proceeds benefit Flyers Charities and the Philadelphia Flyers Alumni Association.
Eric Lindros, John LeClair, and Mike Richards highlight a roster of some of the best players ever to suit up in orange and black. Joe Watson will also put on the skates (but not a helmet) at age 80. The Philadelphia roster unsurprisingly boasts plenty of muscle, led by radio color commentator and former enforcer Todd Fedoruk.
Mark Recchi will enter the franchise Hall of Fame before the Saturday matinee against the first-place Bruins at the Wells Fargo Center.

Flyers Lose 4 Straight
The Flyers have hit a tailspin for a season-high four-game losing streak. Their roster outperformed its talent during the first half of the 2023-24 season. They still occupy a playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division, but capable teams like the Devils, Islanders, Capitals, and Penguins loom with games at hand helping their opportunity to climb the standings.
Nathan MacKinnon put on a show for the Avalanche in a 7-4 victory to start the skid. Nikita Kucherov also helped a Lightning team loaded with offensive firepower past the Flyers. The losses exposed Philadelphia’s inability to match the top two point scorers in the NHL.
Owen Tippett went on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. The Flyers will also miss Hart from a hockey perspective. They’ll now lean heavily on Sam Ersson as their top goaltender despite his limited NHL experience.
Owen Tippett Extension
Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff reported that Owen Tippett will sign an eight-year, $49.5 million ($6.2 million AAV) extension to stay in Philadelphia through the 2031-32 season.
Tippett was on a 30+ goal pace before a recent trip to injured reserve. He broke out with 27 goals in his first full-time season at the NHL level in 2022-23. The centerpiece of the Claude Giroux trade has developed his skill as a dangerous sniper and added elements of a power forward to his game.

The NHL salary cap will likely rise about $5 million next season from $83.5 million in 2023-24.
Keith Jones has prioritized fixing a tough cap situation since he joined the front office last summer. He’s begun to restructure the financial future of the organization, and it appears he’s taken another step by locking up a young offensive force.
Danny Briere: Midseason Press Conference
The rookie general manager spoke during his midseason press conference about the turnaround under John Tortorella and the improved player development system. His most revealing comments, however, had to do with the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.
“We keep an eye on the future. We’ve said from the beginning we wanted to build a team that was going to be a Stanley Cup contender for years to come and not just one-in, one-out, one-in, one-out (of the playoffs) like has been going on. The eye is still on the future.” -Danny Briere
The Flyers won’t load up for a playoff race by making a deadline splash. They also won’t fit the profile of a seller that looks to move all useful veterans for draft capital.
“We’re not just going to make trades just to make them. There’s going to be a purpose behind it. A lot of it will depend on the marketplace. We don’t know what other teams will be looking for and what they’ll be willing to pay…Just don’t expect us to go out and spend prime assets trying to make a run.” -Briere
97.5 The Fanatic will continue with updated trade rumors and coverage until the NHL Trade Deadline on March 8.
Looking Ahead
The Flyers could benefit from a reset during the upcoming NHL All-Star Break after the Alumni Weekend festivities. Travis Konecny will represent the Flyers at Scotiabank Arena, the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
