Do You Still Think The Philadelphia Phillies Should’ve Signed Trea Turner?
The Trea Turner contract will be a topic of conversation in Philadelphia for 11 years.
This past offseason, there was a free agent frenzy of MLB shortstops. Shiny toys always get the most attention, and Turner was part of a four-headed monster of name-brand quality. Dansby Swanson, Carlos Correa, and Xander Bogaerts all had desirable reasons for the Philadelphia Phillies to pursue their services too.
It’s very easy now to say that the decision to sign Trea Turner for 11 years and an average annual salary of $27,272, 727 was questionable. I absolutely applaud the symmetry of those numbers, but was it a smart decision?
Entering the final stretch of the 2023 regular season, you can make an early call on that for yourself. Would you do it all again?
The Big Fish: Trea Turner
How has it really been in comparison to the other stars that were available? Here is his production in the first year of an 11-year deal with a $27.27 million average salary.
- Batting Average: .238
- On-Base Percentage: .291
- Home Runs: 11
- RBI: 39
- Fielding Percentage: .967
- Errors: 13

The Consolation Prize: Xander Bogaerts
The San Diego Padres lost out. Trea Turner rejected their contract offer. They quickly then turned their attention to the second option, and it’s turned out fairly well in the early going.
Bogaerts: $25.45M average salary over 11 seasons
- Batting Average: .268
- On-Base Percentage: .344
- Home Runs: 11
- RBI: 37
- Fielding Percentage: .989
- Errors: 4
The Re-sign: Carlos Correa
The Minnesota Twins then didn’t have a chance to land one of the two best options. They decided that retaining the services of their current shortstop was the next move. They decided to crank up the average annual salary on a shorter-term deal.
Correa: $33.33M average salary over 6 seasons
- Batting Average: .221
- On-Base Percentage: .295
- Home Runs: 12
- RBI: 46
- Fielding Percentage: .991
- Errors: 3
The Flashy Former Champion: Dansby Swanson
Swanson was the next level target as the heart and soul of the Atlanta Braves team that won the World Series in 2021. His star quality and playoff pedigree raised the interest of all the shopping teams.
$25.28M average salary over 7 seasons
- Batting Average: .263
- On-Base Percentage: .346
- Home Runs: 17
- RBI: 53
- Fielding Percentage: .986
- Errors: 5
The Verdict on the Trea Turner Signing
Any resolution is incomplete, but if you have to look at the four options, it’s hard to make a case that Trea Turner has done anything but disappoint. Here are my thoughts:
- Turner has 13 errors, which I believe is a gross understatement of his true fielding errors. He has been the worst of the four in the field, and it’s not close. He has eight more errors than the others.
- Turner has comparable power numbers to Correa and Bogaerts, but Swanson has almost 50% more home runs. Turner needs to turn that around.
- Turner is better than Correa in batting average and on-base percentage, but he isn’t as productive in RBIs or fielding.
Let’s let this argument breathe. However, Trea Turner needs to change the narrative. He is clearly struggling, and the Phillies only have 10 more seasons to pay him after this!
