Phillies Trade For Right-Handed Starter Michael Lorenzen
The Phillies made us wait until the final day before the Trade Deadline, but they have finally made a move. They are acquiring RHP Michael Lorenzen from the Detroit Tigers. In exchange, they will send Infield prospect Hao-Yu Lee back to the Tigers. Jeff Passan and Jon Morosi were the first to report the deal.

Michael Lorenzen was the Tigers’ lone All-Star this season and has a 3.58 ERA through 18 starts. In 9 of his 18 starts, he has allowed 1 or fewer runs. And he often pitches into the 6th or 7th inning. He is likely to join the starting rotation. It is worth noting though that he also has a history of successfully pitching out of the bullpen. He could start for the rest of the regular season, then serve as another bullpen arm come playoff time.
…
It does beg the question of what do you do with Christopher Sanchez though. The Phillies likely did not expect him to pitch as well as he has since they made him the 5th starter. In 9 starts he has a 2.66 ERA, and a WHIP under 1.000. He could go into the bullpen as a long man, or he could be sent down to the minor leagues to continue getting starter-type innings. But he could also remain in the rotation too, and they just go with 6 starters. The Phillies have an extended period of time without an off day coming up. It would make some sense to use 6 starters, to keep every pitcher on regular rest.
Regardless, Michael Lorenzen is a nice addition to the Phillies. He is having a career year. And even though pitching has not been an issue for them, another great arm never hurts.
Hao-Yu Lee is the Phillies 5th-rated prospect. But he is blocked by Trea Turner, Bryson Stott, and Alec Bohm, making him expendable in a trade. They make use of him acquiring a quality arm at the deadline.
For what it is worth, Lorenzen also has a good history at the plate. His .429 slugging percentage is better than the season slugging from 4 of the Phillies’ everyday players. And he is a righty. Really puts into perspective the Phillies’ dire need for another bat before the deadline.

Tracking All The Moves At The MLB Trade Deadline
It’s about that time of the year. The MLB Trade Deadline is August 1st, and teams are starting to make moves. Good teams are shopping around for that final guy that can get them over the top. Bad teams are looking to offload players in hopes to get that prospect that can get them back to winning.
World Series can be won and lost at this time of the year. Joe Blanton was a deadline deal. And while he was not the flashy name that got fans excited at the time, he was a big part of the World Series victory. Cliff Lee was obviously a deadline deal. So what will the Phillies do? Are they going to add the big right-handed bat everyone wants them to do? Starting pitching depth? Another Bullpen arm?
Dave Dombrowski has a history of making great deadline deals, whether it was when he was in charge of the Tigers or Red Sox. And the Phillies are expected to be big players at this deadline too.
