Phillies Trade Bailey Falter to Pirates For Infielder Rodolfo Castro
The Phillies did not acquire the power-hitting right-hander most fans wanted before the deadline. But they did sneak in one more deal. They shipped Bailey Falter to Pittsburgh. In exchange, they are getting back a Utility Infielder Rodolfo Castro. Jayson Stark was the first to report the deal.

Rodolfo Castro is a switch hitter, and in 3 seasons, he is hitting .226, with a slugging of .396. You may recognize him as the guy who once lost his phone sliding into 3rd base. Expect him to fill the role left behind by Josh Harrison after the Phillies DFA’s him to make room for Michael Lorenzen. He is not a Free agent until 2029, so they get cheap infield depth for the next 6 years. Last season he did hit 11 HRs in 71 games, so there is some power upside. At the very least, he offers more at the plate than Harrison was giving them.
Bailey Falter’s time with the Phillies was clearly at an end, even before this trade. He started the season in the rotation. But poor play quickly got him sent back down. And even when the Phillies were scrambling for a 5th starter, they did not bring him back up. Opting instead for guys like Dylan Covey, bullpen games, before finally settling on Christopher Sanchez. Even in the minors, he continued to struggle. So a fresh start with a new team is probably what was best for both sides.
What will disappoint Phillies fans is that they did not go out and get the extra bat many felt they needed. Despite a high-priced lineup, the Phillies have at times struggled to score runs. Bryce Harper is dealing with a power drought post-Tommy John’s surgery. Trea Turner is struggling badly in his first season here. After a strong start, Nick Castellanos has regressed to what he was doing last year. And Kyle Schwaber is still hitting under .200. They clearly miss the power of Rhys Hoskins, and no one has stepped up to replace it. But now that they did not bring anyone in to do that, it will fall on the guys already here to step up and fix the issues with the bats.

Tracking All The Moves At The MLB Trade Deadline
It’s about that time of the year. The MLB Trade Deadline is August 1st, and teams are starting to make moves. Good teams are shopping around for that final guy that can get them over the top. Bad teams are looking to offload players in hopes to get that prospect that can get them back to winning.
World Series can be won and lost at this time of the year. Joe Blanton was a deadline deal. And while he was not the flashy name that got fans excited at the time, he was a big part of the World Series victory. Cliff Lee was obviously a deadline deal. So what will the Phillies do? Are they going to add the big right-handed bat everyone wants them to do? Starting pitching depth? Another Bullpen arm?
Dave Dombrowski has a history of making great deadline deals, whether it was when he was in charge of the Tigers or Red Sox. And the Phillies are expected to be big players at this deadline too.
