I’m Begging You Dombrowski, Don’t Be Hasty To Make A Deal
We are entering the final two weeks before the MLB Trade Deadline. As much as I am impressed with his roster formation and enjoying every minute of this 2024 season, I don’t want to see Dave Dombrowski be in a rush to make a deal.
Are there areas of potential improvement? Absolutely! Am I concerned that the desire to do so might leave them deficient in another area? Completely. Here are some of my thoughts on what might transpire that could lead to roster danger!
Do Not Devalue Defense
Johan Rojas has impacted two Phillies victories on this last home stand alone with just his defense. Rojas ran down two balls for spectacular plays that led to huge ovations and helped insure wins. It’s important to note that these are plays no other outfielder on this club makes.
That doesn’t mean that they couldn’t improve offensive production from the CF position. The bottom line is this. Rojas is on pace for 40 steals, he’s batted above the level of expectation the organization had in Spring too. Giving up on Rojas as the everyday center fielder will hurt them defensively. This team isn’t losing games due to a lack of offense. Rojas is a weapon. Deploy him.
There Is An Outfield Position That Could Be Improved Upon
First, Rob Thomson and the Phillies organization is completely committed to Nick Castellanos. He has struggled mightily at times, but his defense has been top notch and he’s been better over the last six weeks. They are not looking for a replacement in right field.
The elephant in the room is whether Brandon Marsh needs a new platoon partner in left or if the team would decide to find a superior permanent option. Chemistry matters and Marsh has most certainly provided great defense in left and is strong vs right-handed pitching. His deficiency vs left-handed pitching calls for a move. I don’t think they would look to move him, but that could be a clubhouse-shaking move. Go get a right-handed outfield bat.
They Need Another Bullpen Arm
It will hopefully be a complete luxury item, but I want to see one of the best bullpen arms available added. You never know if Jose Alvarado will be cruising or struggling come October.
Are they ready to count on Orion Kerkering in critical spots this playoff season? Hoffman has been tremendous but Rob Thomson wants closer flexibility. I’d splurge on the best reliever available. With this starting rotation being tightened up in the playoffs, I’d feel confident they are the best in baseball.
The Bottom Line For Dave Dombrowski Is…
The Phillies have the best record in baseball. They are looking to secure the top seed in the National League and potentially all of baseball. They are easily good enough to win it all. I don’t want to see the top three prospects touched (Miller, Crawford, Painter) but anything else should be on the table.
I was told by the legendary GM John Schuerholz once that sometimes tinkering with a roster is more difficult and stressful than swinging for the big fish trade. I’m not sure they could have a better man in charge to make these critical decisions. If the trade deadline is fairly quiet, I’ll be OK with it.
