“The Phillies Haven’t Played Anyone” Argument Is In Shambles
All year we have heard the same thing. “The Phillies haven’t played anyone.” With them out to a hot start, fans and media around the league tried to diminish what the Phillies were accomplishing by pointing at their “easy schedule.” There were even people in Philadelphia trying to make that argument.
It was ridiculous even then. I pointed out back in May that while they may not have beaten many “good teams” they had beaten up many good pitchers and good lineups. But now, on July 11th, that argument is in complete shambles.
The Death of “The Phillies Haven’t Played Anyone” Argument
Today the Phillies will get the chance to sweep the Dodgers, the team considered to be the Phillies’ biggest competition in the NL. So far, they have outscored them 14-4 and won both games. Even if they do lose game 3, they would have won the series and will have given themselves a larger lead in the overall NL seeding.
They are now 22-13 (.629) against teams at .500 or better. The best record in the entire MLB. But it goes even deeper than that. I separated it by just vs fellow NL teams at .500 or better. In that scenario, they are 20-9 (.690).
They already won a series vs the Dodgers, swept the Brewers, took 3 out of 5 vs the Mets, won both series vs the Cardinals, and are 5-1 against the Padres. The Braves are the only team that beat them. But even that was the 1st series of the year and a series where the Phillies were missing a third of their lineup.
How Have Other NL Teams Played Against Over .500 Teams
Knowing how well the Phillies have played against the other NL playoff teams, I was curious how the other teams in the NL did. So I went through each of their schedules to get their records as well.
Currently, the Phillies, Dodgers, Braves, Brewers, Padres, Mets, and Cardinals are all over .500 in the NL.
Not only do the Phillies have far and away the best record in the NL vs other potential playoff teams, but they have also played the most games against them.
It seems most of the other NL teams, are struggling against each other. The Padres are the only other team to win the majority of their series against other NL teams over .500. If you take the Phillies out of it, they have won 5 out of 7 series against these other teams, and have a record of 13-9, but including the Phillies, they are just .500.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers have only won half of these series, and everyone else has lost the majority of these series. The Braves are 9-13 in these games, and that includes them being 4-2 against the Phillies. They are 5-9 against all the other teams on this list. The Phillies meanwhile have only lost 2, with 1 split.
So Put “The Phillies Haven’t Played Anyone” Argument To Bed
The overall point is that the whole “the Phillies haven’t played anyone” thing, is dead and buried. Of the NL teams, they have by far the most impressive resume going into the All-Star Break against good teams. You could argue it’s the most impressive in the entire MLB. Though the Orioles also have a very impressive resume.
So for all those people who loved to spam “The Phillies haven’t played anyone”… what now? Because you won’t be able to make that argument with a straight face anymore.
