Jayson Stark Says The Right-Handed Hitter Market Is Not Great For Phillies
The Trade deadline is now just a few days away. August 1st will be the final chance for teams to either bolster their roster or sell off guys before they leave in free agency. Thankfully for us, the Phillies are in full buy mode. They may be out of the division race, but they are firmly in contention for one of those Wild Card Spots. And as we learned last year, if you just make it into the playoffs, you can go all the way to the World Series. But what will the Phillies do at the deadline? To get some insight, The Best Show Ever talked to Hall of Famer Jayson Stark.
What positions should they target? Are there certain names that make sense for them? They asked Jayson Stark, but Phillies fans may not love what he had to say.
“I know Dave will do some stuff. I honestly think he is one of the great trade deadline maestros in the history of the job. But it doesn’t sound like they are close to anything yet. This market is deadly slow…”
The Phillies’ biggest need is clearly right-handed hitters. But Stark seemed unsure if there will even be many available on the market…
“I can’t tell you how little there is of it there right now. A lot of the guys you hear that would be clear upgrades, Adam Duvall or Tyler O’Neil, I don’t know if they will even be available. Brent Rooker or Randall Grichuk. They are possibilities. But we don’t know yet where they are going, because there is way too much need and way too little supply.”
Not great for the Phillies. A bigger name could become available in the next few days. But right now the options out there are not too great. Rooker does have 16 HRs, but he has mostly DHed this season. Grichuk is also having a solid season for the Rockies. But could help the Phillies. But they might not be the big moves some fans are hoping for.
But what about other moves? Jayson Stark also talked about if the Phillies will go after another starting pitcher…
“I think it is now clear that Christopher Sanchez is lessening their urgency to deal for a starter. I don’t know if they should totally trust this, but they need more depth at the very least. Just based on the health history of their guys. They are now open to somebody to guys who can start, or appear in relief. You mentioned Michael Lorenzon’s name… That is the kind of name you should think of.”
Basically, the takeaway is that the Phillies will make moves, maybe just not big ones. But is that the worst thing? The Braves a few years ago when they won the World Series made a series of small moves at the deadline. Nothing flashy, but solid trades for guys like Eddie Rosario and Joc Pederson. Maybe the same could work for the Phillies.

Tracking All The Moves At The MLB Trade Deadline
It’s about that time of the year. The MLB Trade Deadline is August 1st, and teams are starting to make moves. Good teams are shopping around for that final guy that can get them over the top. Bad teams are looking to offload players in hopes to get that prospect that can get them back to winning.
World Series can be won and lost at this time of the year. Joe Blanton was a deadline deal. And while he was not the flashy name that got fans excited at the time, he was a big part of the World Series victory. Cliff Lee was obviously a deadline deal. So what will the Phillies do? Are they going to add the big right-handed bat everyone wants them to do? Starting pitching depth? Another Bullpen arm?
Dave Dombrowski has a history of making great deadline deals, whether it was when he was in charge of the Tigers or Red Sox. And the Phillies are expected to be big players at this deadline too.
