Alec Bohm Goes Onto the Injured List As Problems Pile For Phillies
Nothing has gone right for the Phillies this year. All of their starting pitchers either started out slow or injured. The prized phenom Andrew Painter has yet to pitch in either Major League or Minor League games. Bryce Harper was of course hurt to start the year. The guys who are healthy, are not hitting very well. All of that has led to them being 25-30 heading into June. Once again they will have to dig out of a hole just to make the playoffs. To make it all worse, now Alec Bohm is heading to the IL with a hamstring injury.
Bohm, usually the 3rd baseman, has had to play a lot of First base of late, due to a lack of better options. They were already way down the first base depth chart. Rhys Hoskins injured himself in camp. At best, he may return at some point in the playoffs, if they make it there. Not long after that, his backup Darick Hall got hurt. He is not expected to return until July. Bohm to this point has played 1st base in 39 games. Clemons played first base in 20 games. Hall played the other 5 games.
…
Issues begin to creep up for Bohm a few days ago. He missed one game, played the next, but then was out last night. Now he will miss at least the next 9 days after being put on the 10-Day IL.
Bohm started the season super hot. He looked like a new player crushing 3 HRs early in the season. But since then he has regressed to the same player he was last year. His slash line is .265/.321/.403. About the league average in every category. His power has mostly disappeared. After hitting 3 HRs in the first 10 games, he hit just 3 more in the next 45.
But despite his struggles, the options after him get grim. Kody Clemons has hit okay for a backup. But he is not an everyday player, and they don’t trust him vs lefties. The plan is to eventually play Bryce Harper at first. But he needs to be cleared to throw first, and that could still take a while. And they have no good options for what to do at first base until then. As mediocre as Alec Bohm has been, his absence could still hurt them given the in-house options they have to replace him over the next two weeks.
Meanwhile, they are also desperately searching for a 5th starter given how poorly every 5th starter they have tried out has done. Bailey Falter was a disaster. Recently Dylan Covey has been ever worse. Just add Alec Bohm’s injury to the mounting list of Phillies’ problems.
