97.5 The Fanatic Flyers Roundup: Showcases in Stadium Series, International Hockey
They were supposed to finish at the bottom of the NHL in 2023-24. Some fans called for them to tank. The Philadelphia Flyers drastically exceeded expectations during the first half of the season. They still don’t plan on going away quietly while more talented division opponents loom behind them. Meanwhile, international hockey is about to regain steam after a drought that’s lasted way too long.
- Tuesday 2/6: Flyers 2, Florida Panthers 1
- Thursday 2/8: Flyers 4, Winnipeg Jets 1
Character Victories
The Flyers entered the NHL All-Star Break on a five-game losing streak in desperate need of a reset. John Tortorella didn’t panic with two upcoming opponents in the top 10 of the league in point percentage. His team responded with two character victories.
The Panthers jumped on the Flyers early, but the Orange and Black scratched out a gutsy 2-1 victory in beautiful Sunrise. They returned home to face a hungry Winnipeg squad and separated themselves with an early 4-0 lead. Sam Ersson closed the door with 28 saves on 29 shots.
Travis Konecny recorded the “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” (goal, assist, fight) in the first game at the Wells Fargo Center following the break. He has emerged as the most consistent offensive threat on the roster with 24 goals and 21 assists.
Scrutiny of the bigger picture still might reasonably lead fans to question their chances of watching playoff hockey this spring. However, nobody can put the Flyers down for what they’ve accomplished over halfway through the season.
NHL Trade Deadline Rumors
The Flyers are one of the most intriguing teams approaching the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. Will their playoff position force Danny Briere to keep some of his veterans? The long-term rebuild still has to take precedence, according to Tortorella.
“We are not backing off at all as far as what we’re trying to do with the organization in the big picture too, as far as rebuilding… If it’s a situation where it’s a really good asset we get back (in a trade that includes a veteran), it’s going to happen. We cannot lose sight of what we’re doing here. On the other side of that, we’re trying to win every god damn game we play.” -John Tortorella
Scott Laughton has emerged as the topic of the NHL media’s latest rumors. Would Briere actually move one of the most respected veterans in the organization? The possibility seemed unlikely without a lucrative offer for a player lauded for his contributions to the organization’s culture.

Darren Dreger, however, thinks the Flyers are more likely to trade Laughton than another division team is to move a comparably valuable and respected veteran.
“(A trade is) very, very, very unlikely unless somebody tables something ridiculous on Boone Jenner, and then you (the Blue Jackets) consider it. That’s what you have to do in the business of being a general manager. Laughton’s a little bit different. Philadelphia’s listening, but they’re not super motivated to trade him.”-Darren Dreger
Briere or any other members of the organization would never say they’re motivated to deal Scott Laughton. However, a trade looks much likelier than it did over the summer when the Flyers reportedly turned down a 1st-round pick.

NHL Returns to International Hockey
The league announced the 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off to replace the All-Star Game next season. The international best-on-best is a round-robin between the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland. The two best teams in the round robin will advance to a one-game final.
One American city and one Canadian city will host the games from Feb. 12-20, 2025. Boston and Montreal are the likeliest hosts.
Team Sweden will most likely choose Jacob Markstrom and Linus Ullmark as their two goaltenders. However, each team will carry a third netminder. Sam Ersson could be the emergency choice. Rasmus Ristolainen won’t steal playing time away from Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell as the top Finnish defensemen, but he could play a complementary role lower in the lineup.
Flyers standouts like Joel Farabee (Syracuse, NY) and Travis Konecny (London, ON, CAN) are longshots to earn roster spots with the loaded talent pools of the two tournament favorites.
The unfortunate reality of world politics means that Russia, one of the best hockey nations in the world, won’t get a fair opportunity. Czechia, Slovakia, and emerging nations with smaller national programs won’t compete in the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off.
The NHL will also send players to the 2026 and 2030 Winter Olympic Games. The best hockey players haven’t truly represented their home nations with the full intensity of international competition since the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Looking Ahead
The NHL Stadium Series is only week away. The Flyers will travel to the Meadowlands for the most-anticipated regular-season game on their schedule in 2023-24. The bitterness of the old Atlantic Division could reignite the bad blood in this territorial rivalry that peaked in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
