Does The Recent Haason Reddick News Redeem Howie Roseman?
When the Eagles first traded Haason Reddick, the overwhelming response was, why? There were people who liked it, but at least from the people we heard respond to the move, it did not seem to be a popular trade among Eagles fans.
But now several months later, Haason Reddick is holding out from the Jets. He still does not have the new contract he wanted. It is the reason the Eagles traded him to begin with. He wanted a new deal, they didn’t want to give him the deal he wanted.
Reddick feels he is underpaid. Given he is the 19th highest-paid Edge Rusher, but has the 4th most sacks in the past 4 seasons, he might have a point. Only Reddick and Myles Garrett had double-digit sacks in each of their last 4 seasons. Right now, he is a bargain. But going into the final year of the deal, he wants a raise.
Now a few weeks into camp, he has requested a trade. The Jets say they do not intend to grant that request. Still, after they traded a conditional 3rd round pick for him, it is not the best of looks.
Does it redeem Howie Roseman though? Many people seem to think so, but I am not so sure.
The Problem With the Haason Reddick Trade
The Jets being dumb and trading for a guy they knew wanted a new deal, but not giving it to him, is their fault. That does not change the original problem I had with the move. We knew he would hold out if he didn’t get the deal he wanted. Barrett Brooks said as much a few months ago on The Best Show Ever.
My issue was always that I thought it made the eagles worse. Reddick was the one sure thing they have at pass rusher. He is not a flawless player, but you can count on him to get after the QB. What they have left is a bunch of question marks.
I already said that Reddick had double-digit sacks in each of his last 4 seasons. Take the edge rushers they have left, and in that same time they have a combined 3 seasons of double-digit sacks. That is 13 seasons between Josh Sweat, Nolan Smith, Brandon Graham, and Bryce Huff, compared to just 4 for Reddick. None of them have more than 1.
Huff has never been a full-time player and has 1 productive season. Sweat was great in 2022, but fell off with an increased snap count last season. Graham is 36. Smith has never been productive at any level. then there is Jalyx Hunt who is a complete wildcard.
If those guys can combine to make a productive edge rush room, the trade will look like a stroke of genius. But what if they don’t? What if Huff is exposed in a full-time role? What if the real Sweat is closer to what we saw last season? What if Nolan Smith doesn’t take the next step? There are so many unknowns with this Edge Rush room, and they got rid of the one known they had.
It is possible that giving Reddick the deal he wanted would have been the best move. It would give them at least 1 sure thing. Would it have been an overpay? Maybe. its clear both the Eagles and the Jets don’t think he is worth what he is asking for. Maybe it would have hurt them in the long run. Maybe they wouldn’t have made 1 of the other moves they made if they resigned Reddick instead of signing Huff.
Being a GM is not an easy job. Howie Roseman had to balance what players he wanted to keep. He chose to move on from Reddick to make improvements elsewhere. It might be the right move. But if the Edge Rush room becomes an issue this season, and they aren’t getting consistent pressure, the Haason Reddick trade might become the shadow that hangs over the team.
So even with him holding out, and requesting a trade, I can’t say Howie made the right move. Because what happens with the Jets has nothing to do with my initial problems with the trade. I still have major concerns about what this Edge Rusher room will look like for them.
