Phillies Now Suffering From Choice To Keep Garrett Stubbs
The Phillies were mired in a slump. They hadn’t won a series since they swept the Dodgers in early July, and hadn’t won the 1st game of a series since July 9th. But they left Seattle on a high note. They may have dropped games 1 and 2, but on Sunday Zack Wheeler pitched a gem, and Bryce Harper looked tremendous at the plate.
Game 1 vs the Dodgers was not going well though. They got an early 2-0 lead, but then Aaron Nola had a blow up inning. He pitching a gem in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. But got blown up for 4 runs in the 3rd.
The Phillies bats, still not quite awake, mustered only 3 runs in the first 8 innings. But Nick Castellanos lead off the 1st inning with a single. From there on, 1 swing could have tied it. But who came up for the last at bat of the game? Garrett Stubbs. As you would assume by watching all of his at bats in the last two seasons, Stubbs did not come up clutch. He popped up to SS and the game was over.
Garrett Stubbs Fails In A Big Moment For Phillies
There were two other guys who came up short that inning. Austin Hays and Bryson Stott popped up as well. But with them at the plate, you at least have a chance. The second Stubbs stepped up, we knew the game was over. Last season he hit .204, this season it is down to .188, and his SLG is down to .227.
Backup catchers do not need to be great. Most will be mediocre. But you can’t even call Stubbs mediocre. Mediocre players sometimes come up clutch. Bryson Stott has been mediocre this season. Stubbs is just bad. Terrible even. Of all the hitter in the league who have been on their teams 26-man roster all season, he might be the worst one.
People swore that with JT Realmuto back, it would not matter how bad Stubbs is. He won’t play much they said. But it mattered last night. JT was not available to pinch hit. Stubbs had to come up in a big moment. They have someone on the team that is close to an automatic out. You may as well let the pitcher hit.
If that was Rafael Marchan, it might have been a hit. Maybe not a game tying HR, but a single would be in the cards. Kyle Schwarber might have had a chance to hit. Instead, they waived the white flag and sent a guy who no one had any faith in even getting on base.
People say he is a “vibes guy.” Last I checked, the vibes around the team are pretty bad. They are mired in a terrible slump. He is certainly not going to hit them out of it. If his job is team spirit, maybe he needs to actually do something about the teams low spirits.
Time To Move On From Stubbs
Even Johan Rojas is more reliable at the plate. There have been times where Rojas came up clutch. They also have more depth there where they can usually afford to pinch hit for him. Because they only have 2 catchers, that is not the case with Stubbs. JT was not available to pinch hut. Thomson did not want him to play at all, and if the Phillies had tied the game, he would have needed to come in to catch.
Stubbs can’t hit, he is not that great behind the plate. So what does he do here? What does he bring to the team that they just cant waive him to bring up a superior player in Marchan? What will happen in the playoffs if JT gets hurt, and they need to rely on Stubbs to hit in another big moment?
If JT is dealing with something, which he appears to be, they need someone reliable back there. Not the team DJ, a guy who can actually play. They suffered from keeping Stubbs around against the Dodgers. They need to correct their mistake before they get stuck relying on him in a game that matters.
