It’s OK For Dave Dombrowski To Admit His Mistake
There are so many things that the Phillies have gotten right in the era of Dave Dombrowski. The improvement came quickly and John Middleton obviously believed in his vision and has supported it with financial reckless abandon. We have celebrated so many amazing wins and celebrated with two fantastic Red October’s to remember! Over and over we are given reason to believe that this organization has never been in better hands. While that is true, not everything they do is brilliant.
The Sanchez Extension Is A Stroke Of Genius By Dave Dombrowski
It’s always great to secure young talent at what will turn out to be a discounted rate in the long run. Buying out the arbitration years of Cristopher Sanchez and showing him the proper respect for the growth he has displayed is smart business.
His ability to get ground ball outs, thus keeping the opposition in the yard has raised his stock across MLB. It’s best to buy that stock low when in complete control. That is another win for Dave Dombrowski.
That Doesn’t Mean He Can’t Be Questioned
The decision to protect Cristian Pache is looking dumber by the day. His defensive skill set, no matter what newfangled stat you want to spout off, is not better than that of Johan Rojas. He has now been given the stage to show what he can do and it most certainly hasn’t been the best of weeks.
The move of Rojas to AAA has also caused Brandon Marsh to be moved from left field (where he was excelling) to center field (where he is good). The results have been shaky at times with flashes of production. The bottom line, the defense is not improved.
Center Field Can’t Be A Mixed Bag
There were booted balls which allowed baserunners to take an extra base that led to multiple runs scored just in the first week alone. Pache took a roundabout route to an eventual home run ball that could have potentially been caught if he was at the wall to time his jump. The best defensive outfield for a contender is Castellanos – Rojas – Marsh.
Pache Can’t Hit
In five years of MLB service Cristian Pache is a .177 hitter. The Atlanta Braves, one of the best talent-evaluating organizations in baseball, did not hesitate to include him in a deal for Matt Olson. The Athletics, who are not a great talent-evaluating organization, thought they had seen enough and let him walk away.
His third organization is learning what the others might have already figured out. He can’t hit at the major league level. He’s 0-11 since the Rojas demotion.
Pache Can’t Steal Bases Either
His defensive closing speed is good, but not when compared to Rojas. His speed on the base paths is almost useless. Somehow he can’t use his above-average speed to ever understand how to steal bases.
Rojas in 132 less career at bats has stolen 7 times as many bases as Pache. Rojas has 28 to just four for Pache. So he’s not a great late-inning base running option if you need to grab a base. Again, his skill set isn’t superior.
Do The Right Thing
The next roster decision should not be a hard one. When Kody Clemens is ready to return, the Pache experiment has to end. If you had seen reasons to continue it I would be all in. It’s clear that we haven’t. Dave Dombrowski has done grade-A work since he joined the Phillies. It’s OK to admit that not every assignment is his best work.
