The Philadelphia Phillies Can’t Make This Move
Phillies fans are all thrilled that we finally are going to be able to see the return of Trea Turner to the lineup on Monday night. What isn’t so thrilling is how the team has been playing of late, though it was inevitable that they couldn’t continue to rampage through the NL the way they have been. Philly is just 10-10 in their last 20 games and they have many players struggling mightily. How are they going to make room for the Turner return? There are many options but one of them can’t happen. Which move is that?
How truly bad are the struggles? Are we overreacting?
Bryson Stott is in a horrible stretch right now. He has just 9 hits in the month of June and an on-base percentage of just 28%.
Nick Castellanos is even worse off than Stott. Though he has one more hit than Stott, his on-base percentage is at 22% in June.
The Phillies other outfielders aren’t much better. Johan Rojas has his average up to .235 and has contributed exceptional defense for the majority of opportunities this season. It’s great to have a healthy Brandon Marsh back as an option but after a hot start, he has been quite average. What do they really have in Christian Pache? In limited plate appearances, he is hitting just .219 but his defense has been solid. After making a splash in his first few games David Dahl looks lost at the plate and has just 2 hits in his last 20 plate appearances. Whit Merrifield with his eight-million-dollar price tag has been terrible. He is hitting .181 over the last two months and other than a few blips has been inadequate.
So who do you take off this roster to welcome back Turner?
Let’s start with who it can’t be. The Phillies can’t take the easy way out by sending Johan Rojas down to the minors just because he has options and they can do so. I understand that usually a team doesn’t want to lose a player off their roster so this is a strategy worth deploying. The problem is that the other candidates are most certainly not worthy of demoting a player who has most certainly done nothing to deserve a demotion.
The argument will be that Rojas still isn’t a force at the plate, but ask the pitching staff what player they trust the most to have their backs in the outfield defensively. Rojas is a force and has repeatedly saved runs and turned strong defensive plays into the routine. If you send him down, you are sending an awful message for a franchise with championship aspirations. You can’t keep guys who aren’t contributing just because they have no options for demotion left. So who needs to go?
For me, the decision comes from David Dahl or Christian Pache. It is difficult to make the choice. Dahl has a left-handed bat that has shown some potential and could work in his favor. Pache is the better defensive player with superior speed over Dahl. He also has not been able to take his production to the next level while in a Phillies uniform. With Marsh and Rojas you have two players that can play centerfield so you’re covered there. Why do you need Pache? If you are holding him and worried about losing him you are betting that he finally will evolve into a better player. I believe you’ve given that experiment enough time. Dahl has no true pedigree with the organization and I would have no issue with risking another team grabbing him off waivers.
The Verdict
Take your pick, but it better not be Rojas. The Philadelphia Phillies can’t make this move. Winning organizations keep the best talent. Any other decision is the wrong one for a team that claims to be doing everything to win a championship.
