Ranger Suarez On Track To Make His Start in London
The Phillies had a scare last weekend when a line drive struck Ranger Suarez on his pitching hand. It left him with swelling on his wrist, and people feared the worst. Luckily, he got away from it with no major injury. Still, his start this weekend in London was up in the air. But today, Matt Gelb shared the good news that Ranger Suarez is on track to make his start on Saturday.
I think the assumption many of us had when he left the game the other day was that he would at least miss a start. But not only is Ranger Suarez one of the best pitchers in the league, but he seems to be one of the tougher ones too.
Could this still change? Sure. Gelb left the “barring something unexpected” in there to cover all of his bases. But it seems Ranger is good to go.
Just How Good Has Ranger Suarez Been?
Not only does Ranger lead all qualified pitchers with a 1.70 ERA, but before he left his last start early, he led the MLB in innings pitched per start. Ranger is also 2nd in the league, needing only 14.36 pitches per inning.
Is his stuff overpowering? No. His velocity is near the bottom of the league for starters. But Ranger is disproving the notion that velocity is everything. Ranger controls his stuff better than everyone. A 91 MPH fastball painted in the exact right spot, is more effective than a 100 MPH pitch out of the strike zone, or hung over the plate.
It is not out of nowhere for Ranger Suarez either. We have seen him dominate in each of the last two postseasons. to the point his Playoff ERA is among the best in baseball history. The only new thing is him going deeper into games.
The past two seasons he missed Spring training due to either Visa Issues or injury. This year he had a full Spring training, and it is paying off in a big way.
The pitch off his wrist was the first snag, but he seems to have gotten away from it with minimal damage.
