Is Jeffrey Lurie 1 Of The Best Owners In The NFL?
Adam Schefter was recently on the Kincade and Salcuinus show lauding owner Jeffrey Lurie. Lurie has now been the owner of the Eagles for 30 years. Conventional wisdom is that he is amongst the best owners in the NFL.
Does The Track Record Back Up Jeffrey Lurie?
In those 30 years, the Eagles have been in the postseason 18 times. They have won 10 division tiles. They have been to 3 Super Bowls winning 1.
There is no doubt that he is a good owner, but is he great one? Lurie does deserve credit for the job that he has done, but if we are going to give him credit for team success, he had to take blame for the failures. He deserves credit for hiring Howie Roseman, but he is also responsible for the moves that Howie has made.
Despite his public statements, Lurie was the main reason that the Eagles drafted J. J. Arcega-Whiteside, which was terrible but was also the driving force behind finding an insurance QB for Carson Wentz which turned into Jalen Hurts.
Comparing Jeffrey Lurie To Other Owners
During Lurie’s tenure, we know that the Patriots have been the gold standard, but the Eagles don’t rank as high as we realize when it comes to winning. The Packers, Broncos, Ravens, Rams, Buccaneers, Steelers, Giants, and Chiefs have won multiple Super Bowls since Lurie took over.
When the Eagles beat the Patriots, Doug Pederson said that it was “the new norm”. He was gone in two years.
Nick Sirianni was able to quickly get them back to the Super Bowl, but unfortunately, as we know they blew a 10-point halftime lead aided by a terrible penalty call on James Bradberry. Last year things looked great at 10-1, but we know how the season ended.
Again, if he gets credit for the good things that happen, he must get blame for the bad things.
I think Lurie is a good NFL owner, but he falls short of great. He has been here for a long time, and the Eagles are consistent contenders, but he must take a hit for only getting to the mountaintop once when so many other teams (37.5% of the league) have been there more times.
The Eagles seem poised to have a big year, and if we have another parade down Broad Street then Jeffrey Lurie would ascend to great, but for now, I can’t say it.
