Andrew’s 3 Observations from the Phillies Series Win Over the St Louis Cardinals
The Phillies won their second straight series taking 2 of 3 against the St Louis Cardinals. Here are my 3 observations from this latest series that got them back to .500.
1 – Zach Wheeler can’t do it alone
Wheeler is now 0-2 to start the season. For those of you who overvalue wins and losses for pitchers, this is why you don’t. Through his 3 starts this year, Wheeler has posted a 1.89 ERA which is 10th best amongst starting pitchers who have made at least 3 starts. His WHIP of .89 is 2nd best amongst starters who have made at least 3 starts. The only pitcher better than him in that category is Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow… who is 3-0.
I know we are only 12 games into the season, but the Phillies have wasted 3 Wheeler starts already.
2 – Aaron Nola and the long ball
Before the season started, I made the statement that Aaron Nola would finish as a CY Young finalist. If not a top 3 finalist, he will at least receive votes. So, I am not jumping off that ship already, but I hate seeing the same thing through 3 starts, the long ball.
Through 3 starts, Nola has already allowed 4 home runs which is just one less from the Major League Lead. His two solo shots allowed yesterday didn’t hurt the team. They pulled out the win. But, it is something that we have to continue to keep an eye on after he finished in the top 5 of most home runs allowed last season.
3 – Hopefully a good sign to come for the Phillies
In game 1 of the series, Trea Turner and Johan Rojas hit the ball well. They finished with 3 hits apiece and both drove in a run. Nick Castellanos went 0-5 in game 1 but had a hit in both games 2 and 3. The bats that had the slowest starts to the season that came into the season with questions surrounding them, made an impact offensively.
Does this mean I think Rojas will hit .300 the rest of the way? No. Does this mean I think Trea Turner will be an All-Star like I predicted? Hopefully. Does this mean Nick Castellanos will go on some long-hitting streak? I doubt it. But they were zeros offensively before this series started, I will take any bright spot I can get.
