Andrew’s 3 Observations from the Phillies Series Win Over The Nationals
For the first time this season, the Phillies were able to win a series. After dropping 2 of 3 to both the Braves and Reds, it was good medicine to take on the Nationals this past weekend. I would also like to add that not playing in the rain could be considered good medicine too.
Here are my 3 observations from the Phillies 3 three-game series in “Citizens Bank Park South.”
1 – The Starting pitching is still the strength of this team.
So much is talked about the Phillies lineup. Why wouldn’t it be? There are superstar names in the everyday lineup, there is a lot of money tied up into it, and we have seen success in the past. But when it comes to the actual success of this team, it has been the pitching. This past series continued to prove that.
The Phillies only scored 11 runs in this series against a bad Nationals team. The pitching kept the opposition to just 5 runs in the 3 games played. Through the first 9 games of the season, the Phillies starters have a combined ERA of 3.23. That is 9th best in baseball and 3rd best in the National League. Those numbers include the horrible start for Nola in the second game of the season.
2 – The base running is a problem.
Just because the Phillies won the series doesn’t mean all the observations must be positive. Through 9 games this season, the Phillies have been caught stealing 6 times and have been thrown out on the basepaths 6 times. Both of those stats are league-worst.
I know it has only been 9 games, but this has been a problem for the Phillies the last two seasons. The last two seasons have had a lot of success, but that shouldn’t keep you from wanting the team to be better in areas of the game where it could be more mental than physical
3 – Johan Rojas can’t hit.
.045. That is his batting average. .045. He has 1 hit in 22 at-bats. His fielding is exceptional. His speed is top-tier. But at what point does his horrible, not poor, but HORRIBLE hitting be more of a negative than the positives of his other aspects in his game?
The team shouldn’t send him down yet, but if this continues through the month of April, they should consider it before he plays a game in the month of May. Some thought he should have started the season in Triple-A so that he didn’t have a bad start that could hurt his confidence… well that wasn’t their decision, and we are seeing it play out.
