Trea Turner Was Committed To Being a Better Shortstop This Season
Last season Trea Turner was a terrible shortstop. Only Tim Anderson had a worse Defensive Runs Saved stat(DRS) among Shortstops. His 27 errors led the entire MLB. Even in the playoffs, his glove was still a disaster with a couple more untimely errors. His bat turned around in August, but he never got into a groove in the field.
But it seems like Trea Turner is committed to changing that. One of his focuses this offseason was being better in the field. Jayson Stark joined The Best Show Ever this week and talked about how committed Turner has been to improving his glove.
“His defense was to me about lack of focus because he’s a great athlete. He can be better. He knows it. He devoted the winter to it. He devoted this spring to it. I thought he was much better, much sounder this spring when I saw him. That’s a huge part of his game and what they’re trying to be, which is one of the top ten defensive teams in the sport.”
Jayson Stark is not the only one saying this either. Larry Bowa joined Mid-Days With Bob Cooney and echoed a similar sentiment. And Larry Bowa knows a thing or 2 about playing the shortstop position well.
The Phillies Defense Could Be Great If Trea Turner Figures It Out
For once, the Phillies defense is looking like it could be elite. Bryce Harper will play first, with a full off-season of work playing the position. The Phillies think he has Gold Glove potential.
Zack Wheeler, Taijuan Walker, and Bryson Stott were finalists for Gold Gloves last season. Johan Rojas seems like a lock to win one if his bat is good enough to keep him in the lineup. Even Alec Bohm has improved a ton in the field. Turner was their one weak link left. But if Stark and Bowa are correct, even he may not be an issue anymore.
This Phillies defense could be special. Put them behind one of the best pitching staffs in the league, and it makes this Phillies team one to watch.
