Despite Trade Rumors, Josh Sweat Is Staying With The Eagles For 2024
The Bryce Huff signing, along with rumors that both Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat were on the trade market had Eagles fans wondering what the D-Line will look like next year. The picture became a little clearer today though. Per Tom Pelissero, Sweat restructured his deal with the Eagles. Jeremy Fowler then reported that the new deal gives Sweat $10 million in guaranteed money, with the chance to get $13 million.
Josh Sweat Coming Off A Down Year For The Eagles
Two years ago, Josh Sweat reached double-digit sacks for the first time in his career. Last year was a down year though. He racked up just 6.5 sacks, with 0 in the last 8 weeks of the season. Like many of his teammates, he seemed to hit a wall. He did have a strong start, with 6.5 sacks over 9 games. Sweat was near the top of the league in pressure rate at certain points. But his production disappeared in the back half of the season.
His down season, paired with this being a contract year, had people thinking he may be traded. Especially after the Eagles signed Bryce Huff. But while he still is not locked up long-term, he now at least has security in his spot on the team for 2024.
How Does This Affect Haason Reddick?
Now it becomes a question of what they do with Haason Reddick. Despite his 4 straight seasons with double-digit sacks, two of which came in Philly, his name is still in trade conversations. Reddick wants more money. He is outside the top 15 highest-paid edge-rushers. When he asked for a raise, the Eagles gave him permission to seek a trade. That could be a smoke screen for them to try and work out a new deal. But Reddick wants more money, and they will either need to pay him or move him.
If they keep Reddick, they could have a dangerous Edge-rusher room. Reddick, Sweat, Huff, and Nolan Smith. Brandon Graham is also back, but his playing time will likely be limited. We will have to see how everything plays out though.
