Eagles Sign Edge-Rusher Bryce Huff To Record Breaking Deal
The Eagles have made their first splash of free agency. But it was not for Saquon Barkley as so many rumors suggest may happen. Instead, they came out of nowhere to land one of the top pass rushers on the market. Per Adam Schefter, the Eagles have signed former Jets Edge Rusher Bryce Huff to a 3-year, $51.1 million deal. It makes him the highest-paid, non-QB, undrafted free agent in NFL history.
It is actually a relatively team-friendly deal. He will get ab $17 million per year. It makes him the 17th highest-paid edge rusher in the league. By the end of free agency, he could be outside the top 20.
Huff broke out last year, racking up 10 sacks and 67 pressures as part of the Jets defense. It took him a while to get going though, as would be expected from an undrafted free agent. It’s generally hard enough for pass rushers to make an immediate impact. But as an undrafted free agent, you don’t even have your playing time guaranteed. Which is why in his first 3 seasons he had just 9 sacks. But the Memphis product finally broke out in year 4, earning himself a big payday.
It will be interesting to see what this means for Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat. Reddick was “given permission to seek a trade,” a month ago, and we learned recently they were shopping Sweat around too. At the time it made no sense given how little they had behind those two guys. Now Huff makes one of them expendable. Nolan Smith is also there, but I don’t know if he showed enough yet to be ready to trust him fully.
The one downside with Bryce Huff is that he offers far less as a run-stopper. His pass-rush stats are elite, but he is mediocre against the run. But with Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis in the middle, they may hope they can cover up his deficiencies there.
