The Unlikeliest Guest: Angelo Cataldi Joins John Kincade
Potential the unlikeliest guest you can think of joined The John Kincade Show. Local radio legend Angelo Cataldi recently released his book “LOUD: How a Shy Nerd Came to Philadelphia and Turned up the Volume in the Most Passionate Sports City in America” to tell the story of his 33-year career in the Philadelphia market.
He talked about his unmistakable trademark style, his background as a journalist, the criticism of local coaches and athletes, and his relationship with a former competitor.
Changes in the Philadelphia Sports Fan
Angelo discussed the changes he sees in modern Philadelphia sports fans. The shift was never more obvious than when Phillies fans gave a standing ovation to Trea Turner this summer. He hilariously called his words the “lament of an older person.”
“The people back at my station decided to organize a standing ovation for a guy making $300 million who was hitting .230. I couldn’t believe it… If I was still there, I would’ve done everything to sabotage it.” -Angelo Cataldi
Cataldi has seen it all. He was there when fans infamously let out a loud “BOO!” in New York City when the Eagles drafted Donovan McNabb. He lived through Phillies fans throwing batteries at J.D. Drew.
He explained to the live audience at the 97.5 The Fanatic studio that a former caller on his show didn’t exactly share the attitude he sees in the younger generation.
“All I could think of: John Kincade, if he had called our show 25 years ago and said, ‘You know what, I know this guy hasn’t scored a goal in 15 games. Let’s give him an ovation.’ That is not the way we did it! You’re right it got softer, a lot softer.”
Angelo Cataldi Shows Great Respect for John Kincade
Cataldi ended his interview properly with a classy tribute to a long-time colleague. John proudly admits how much Angelo impacted his career in sports radio. The mentorship showed itself in through Angelo’s kind words. He focused especially on John’s long-term success and admirable journey to overcome cancer three times.
