Big 5 Basketball made four announcements at a press conference at the Finneran Pavilion at Villanova University on Thursday. The expansion to the new format and changes on the women’s basketball side will continue the modernization of a beloved Philadelphia tradition.
Big 5 Classic: Men's And Women's Basketball
The Palestra will always be the home of the Big 5. However, the inaugural Big 5 Classic at the Wells Fargo Center renewed excitement for the annual men's basketball round robin in 2023.
Saint Joe’s became the first winner under the new format when they defeated Temple in the 1-2 matchup. LaSalle edged Penn in the 3-4 game, and Drexel beat Villanova in the 5-6 matchup.

Villanova Athletic Director Mark Jackson spoke about how the success of the new format encouraged the renewal for three more years and the expansion to the women’s side.
The second annual Men's Big 5 Classic will take place on Saturday, December 7 at the Wells Fargo Center. The six women's teams will play their inaugural Big 5 Classic at Finneran Pavilion on Friday, December 6.
The addition of Drexel to the Women's Big 5 rounds out the former “City 6” under a name too iconic in Philadelphia to drop.
“We’re going to keep it the Big 5. All these college things around the country, they don’t care how many teams are in it. They still call it by the original name. This will always be the Big 5 with six very important members.” -Dan Hilferty
Dan Hilferty: Big 5 Ambassador
Dan Hilferty became the CEO/Chairman of Comcast Spectacor in February 2023. He’s taken initiative in the “New Era of Orange” with the Flyers and proposed massive changes to the Philadelphia Sports Complex.
His work also includes the preservation and renewal of a local tradition unlike any other.
“We are all deeply committed to preserving the legacy and traditions of the Big 5. We want to, once again, be beloved and an energetic part of the Philadelphia sports scene.” -Hilferty
The former Independence Blue Cross executive has built a glowing reputation in all corners of the Philadelphia area. His work in the Catholic and Jesuit communities has entrenched him into the alumni network at his alma mater, Saint Joseph’s University.
“The partnerships with the six schools, the positive response from fans, and the support of the city encouraged us to move forward with everything we’re sharing today… As an ambassador to the Big 5, I look forward to tapping into the alumni network, business community, and beyond to continue building excitement for the entire Big 5.” -Hilferty
Changes On The Women's Side
Saint Joe’s women’s head coach Cindy Griffin spoke about the growth of the women’s game in recent seasons and an opportunity to continue the proud legacy of past generations of Women’s Big 5 basketball.
She revisited history by pulling a cowbell out to cheer on the announcement and then tossed a streamer into the crowd.
Drexel Athletic Director Maisha Kelly complemented the unmatched “support, collaboration, and uniqueness” of Big 5 Basketball in Philadelphia.
Ray Dunne of 97.5 The Fanatic shared his enthusiasm for one of the highlights of his upcoming season as the Temple women's play-by-play announcer.
"I’m thrilled that they’re doing this. It was really cool to see the success the event had on the men’s side last year, and with how good these women’s programs are in Philly, I can’t wait to see how it all plays out." -Ray Dunne
Big 5 games at the Palestra hadn’t drawn their best crowds in the years leading up to the move to the Wells Fargo Center in 2023. The continued expansion of the six-team format provides reason for optimism in continuing and advancing the passion that’s characterized college basketball in Philadelphia through generations.

The final four is officially upon us. A #9 seed, two #5 seeds, and a #4 seed. Not what everyone predicted! Three of the teams that will take over Houston next weekend come from sunny beach corners of the country. The other comes from the raw Northeast. Florida Atlantic will take on San Diego State in the first game on Saturday. About two hours and forty minutes later, Miami will play UConn. This year's matchups not only include unlikely teams, they also four very different uniform designs. In ranking the final four uniforms, we took a close look at the unique details each combination entails.
Florida Atlantic and Miami will be the away teams, which historically means they will be sporting the color threads. San Diego State and UConn would then wear white. In terms of school colors, we have three that rock a vibrant design and one that is more traditional. Florida Atlantic, San Diego State and Miami have uniform accents that help make the colors pop. They contain custom aesthetics that represent the school nickname thematically. While UConn's navy, red, and white layout goes for classic look.
Before we get to our final rankings, let's break down what we've seen so far and what is expected to worn on Saturday night.
Game One:
Florida Atlantic has been the home and away team so far in their journey to cut down nests. This has resulted in three different uniform combinations. The Owls wore the road reds in game one vs. Memphis. They were the home team in game two vs. FDU, so this was their one game in white. As a big underdog vs. Tennessee in game three, they opted for their alternate threads, which is a navy uniform displaying "Owls" in a cursive font across the front. Finally, this past weekend, we saw FAU go back to their more common red away team look. What's most unique about this uniform is that the last name is printed across the lower back (below the numbers) as opposed to across the shoulders. Florida Atlantic is an Adidas school.
San Diego State has surfed through the tournament with two different looks. As the home team vs. Charleston, Furman, and Creighton they sported their home whites. It's a standard home design with "San Diego State" printed in black across the chest. This is complemented by red numerals and the school's strong logo stamped on the lower right trim of the shorts. SDSU knocked off the South region's #1 seed in Alabama Friday night. This was the one time they were the road warriors and wore their black uniforms. The difference is that the primary black has "Aztecs" printed across the chest. There is no white in this uniform. It's all black with red accenting. San Diego State is a Jordan-brand school.
Game Two:
Miami, just like their fellow Floridians FAU, has worn three different uniform options in the 2023 tournament. All three are different from each other. They tipped off wearing white with "Canes" spelled out. This is accented by green and orange ribboning throughout the top and bottoms. The Hurricanes then went with their road "Miami" greens in game two vs. Indiana. This is where things get interesting. In the next two games, Miami would defeat the #1 seed in Houston and #2 seed Texas. Both games saw Miami opting for their alternate black option. This has the infamous "U" logo on the tank and shorts. The back of the shorts look like a school color hurricane - with bold waves of green and orange. It's a pattern unlike any other short we've seen in this year's March Madness. Miami is also an Adidas school.
UConn is the highest remaining seed left in the tournament as the #4. However, their quest to get to Houston also includes a mix of home white and road navy. Their path has been - white, white, white, for the first three rounds. Then, the road navy option vs. Gonzaga in the elite eight. Although, you could have easily confused the two teams given their almost identical school colors. In their 100 + year history (with four tournament championships), UConn has not strayed much from their classic uniform look over the years. They've simply varied the "UCONN" vs. "Connecticut" print. The Husky logo on the side of the shorts is such a powerful touch. UConn is a Nike school.
The Final Fit
Typically, in the NCAA men's tournament, we see a team sport one uniform option all the way through. We may see a team always in their home whites due to being the higher seed. Or a school will can go a more superstitious route and wear a color like maze each game because it is flexible enough to serve as a home or away option.
The 2023 tournament has presented us with some unique color combinations without consistency. To complete a ranking of the final four uniforms here, we assume San Diego State and UConn will be in white as the home teams.
4. Miami

Miami does win for style points. A few teams this tournament have displayed the logo only jersey. Miami's jersey is sharp. The only team in the final four with this look. The shorts just have too much going on. With a bit of a track and field look, the same holds true for the away green shorts.
3. Florida Atlantic

The red certainly pops, especially being the only final four look with the name across the bottom. We've been fortunate to not only get familiar with this great team and coach, but also their fun branding. It's unknown if FAU will be in red or their alternate navy Owls edition.
2. San Diego State

This uniform has it all. A nice mix of new age with traditional. A strong trim representing the university theme, a prominant school logo and a letter / number scheme that compliments each other. Most of all, it's not wise to go against the iconic Jumpman stamp on the right shoulder.
1. UConn

It's hard to top a classic. UConn's threads just scream college hoops tradition. And Coach Dan Hurley knows a thing or two about basketball legacy. Fun fact - UConn wore white in all four of the college championship games they won.
