Will the Eagles Be Allowed to Wear Green in Brazil?
Can you imagine a Philadelphia Eagles game being played with none of the players allowed to wear green? How about a Green Bay Packers game with nobody on the field, or off the field, allowed to wear green? That would be pretty crazy. But, Josh Jacobs set off all kinds of alarms last week when he mentioned during a podcast interview that both the Eagles and Packers wouldn’t be allowed to wear green for their big Week 1 game in Brazil. So, is it for real? Will the Eagles have to go with an alternate color for that Week 1 game?
Will the Eagles Be Allowed to Wear Green in Brazil?
Don’t freak out too much if you’ve heard the rumor that the Eagles won’t be allowed to wear green in their Week 1 matchup in Brazil. During a recent interview on the Green Light with Chris Long, Jacobs mentioned that the Green Bay Packers have been informed that they aren’t allowed to wear green during their trip to South America and the Brazil game.
“They said that the part of Brazil we’re going to, you can’t even wear green at,” Jacobs said in the interview. “They said, I guess, something to do with the gangs and stuff.” He mentioned that the same deal was with the Philadelphia Eagles. If that sounds shady to you, then you have a good gut instinct, because now, the NFL has responded to correct this rumor.
The NFL has come out in a statement and wants everyone to know that fans and players will be allowed to wear green in Brazil. An NFL spokesman commented to the Philadelphia Inquirer that when the game is played in early September, “You will see a stadium full of fans wearing the green of the Eagles and the green of the Packers.” So, why the confusion? Well, there’s an informal ban on the color green in Brazil that’s related to the area soccer team. That ban was discussed by CBSSports.com’s Jeff Kerr in an article in April. “The Eagles-Packers game will be played at Corinthians Arena, which is home to the Brazilian soccer team Corinthians,” Kerr stated. “The biggest rival for Corinthians is Palmeiras, who wear the color green. Corinthians has an informal ban on wearing green, as a former player was actually fined by the club a few years ago for wearing green cleats.” So, the good news is that if you’re going to the Eagles’ Brazil game, you can wear your finest green.
