Making The Case: Why Phillies Fans Should Keep Faith In Trea Turner
Phillies shortstop Trea Turner’s struggles continued during Tuesday night’s game. Having 4 plate appearances, striking out once, but not capitalizing on any of the other opportunities. Although there were not any defensive woes on his part. The offensive side of the ball is still a scary sight. Especially for a 30-year-old big-time free agent in his first year with the Phillies.

The Phillies currently sit on the outside of the final wildcard spot looking in. With the Cincinnati Reds in the first spot, Arizona Diamondbacks in the second, and San Francisco Giants sitting with just a 0.5-game lead in the standings. The Phillies most certainly are not out of it.
One player that has been out of it lately has been the Phillies new shortstop; Trea Turner.
The 30-year-old former 2x all-star signed an 11-year/$300,000,000 contract with the Phillies this past off-season.
After the team decided to move on from fan-favorite Jean Segura, the Phillies certainly upgraded their middle infield. A move that would put rookie phenom Bryson Stott at second base and keep Turner at his natural position of shortstop.
This season has been nothing short of disappointing for Trea Turner. He currently has the lowest batting average of his career since he was first brought up in 2015 where he only played 27 games for the Washington Nationals. The following year he played 72 games and finished second in the N.L. Rookie of The Year voting.
After Tuesday’s game, it has been known that Phillies manager Rob Thomson has decided to bench Turner for tonight’s game (Wednesday the 26th).
A move that fans have been calling for, for some time now.
Maybe a day off is exactly what the superstar shortstop needs, but we may never know.
We saw a big-time free agent from last season struggle in his first year at the Phillies as well.
Now-turned-fan favorite Nick Castellanos struggled in his first year with the Phillies in a similar way that Turner has done through this point in the season.
The fan base did not give up on Nick especially when he was making a tremendous impact in last year’s World Series run, both offensively and defensively.
The fans obviously know what Turner is capable of doing and the impact he can have on a team can be story worthy. That impact could be bigger than what any of us thought, especially when the time comes to push for what the Phillies had near in their sights last year.
