Howie’s Wise Decision Highlighted After Carson Wentz’s Release
Ir was April 24th, 2020 and the Eagles were about to announce their second round pick. Many fans were clammoring for the team to fix the sins of their past. Picks of J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Jalen Reagor could have been fixed. A corner back to play opposite of Darius Slay to make up for the Sidney Jones pick. In many fans eyes the one position the Eagles didnt need was quarterback. He was 10 months removed from signing a $100 million dollar contract and had solidified himself as the franchise QB.
So color us surprised when with the 53rd pick the Philadelphia Eagles selected QB Jalen Hurts.
Yea…..
It was a pick that was ripped and ridiculed because, if all went well you would never see Hurts on the field. But all did not go well. Carson Wentz couldnt handle the fact that the organization did not have the faith in him that they once did. He cracked and crumbled under the pressure, looking like a shell of the QB we saw in 2017. He zigged when he should have zagged. He zagged when he should have zigged. His turnovers went way up and his pocket awareness was non-existent.
Just 21 months after he signed a $100 million dollar extension, Carson Wentz was gone. Traded to Indianapolis for a 3rd round pick and an eventual 1st round pick. The Eagles made a few trades so ultimately here is what the Eagles got for Carson Wentz.
- DeVonta Smith
- AJ Brown
- Keyron Johnson
- 10th pick in the 2023 draft
- 2023 2nd round pick.
The 3rd round draft choice was used in a package to draft DeVonta Smith. The 1st round pick by the Colts was used to acquire assets that ultimately netted them AJ Brown and Keyron Johnson and future picks. Its quite a haul when you look at what transpired after the trade.
The Colts traded Wentz after just one season to the Washington Commanders for a 2nd and 7th round pick. The Commanders have no moved on after one season with Wentz netting them nothing more than laughing and pointing from the rest of the league.
Wentz’ career legitimately might be over. Hard to imagine, after what weve seen over the last three seasons, that a team will give him a starting job in the NFL. Howie Roseman turned garbage into gold and it could set the Eagles up for many years of success.
