Trea Turner And Phillies Agree To 11-Year $300 Million Deal
Trea Turner and the Phillies have been connected since before the off-season even started. He and Bryce Harper used to play together in Washington, and have remained friends since. The Phillies had a need at SS. Everyone knew the Phillies would be heavily into the SS Market. And now they have gotten their guy. Trea Turner and the Phillies have agreed to an 11-year $300 million deal, which includes a full no-trade clause.

Turner was the biggest name in a jam-packed market for Shortstops. Carlos Correa, Zander Bogaerts, and Dansby Swanson. But it was Turner who wound up in Red Pinstripes. And he will now be wearing them for a while alongside Bryce Harper, with both locked up into the 2030s with a full no-trade clause. Though he and the Phillies will have to get by without Harper for the first half of the season while he recovers from Tommy John’s surgery.
Bryson Stott will slide over the 2nd Base, where he probably fits better anyway. And this likely means Jean Segura’s time in Philly is officially over. But in his place, they add a multi-time All-Star and another player with a World Series pedigree.
In 8 seasons, Trea Turner has hit .302, with 124 home runs, and 230 steals. Last year he hit .298, with 21 home runs and 27 steals with the Dodgers. He will bring year-to-year stability to the SS position that the Phillies haven’t really had since Jimmy Rollins. And he will give them a legit speed threat at the top of the lineup. Turner has had as many 46 steals in a season and has had at least 20 in every season with the lone exception of the Covid year. And he has topped 20 home runs in each of the past two seasons.
The Phillies will likely still be looking for bullpen help, and probably another starter too. The big money paid to Trea Turner may preclude them from other big moves. but John Middelton is someone who has committed to spending stupid money, so you never know what else he will have up his sleeve.
