The Mets’ Friday matchup with the Yankees is also postponed, and the Mets are reportedly planning on staying in Miami until at least Friday. This marks the second time the Yankees have had games affected by positive tests on other teams; the first time being their postponed series with the Phillies. That series was eventually was made up, featuring a Yankees home game in Citizens Bank Park.
It’s unlikely these new positive tests will affect the Phillies’ schedule; they don’t face the Mets again until Sept. 4, and they don’t face the Marlins again until Sept. 10. But it could push the Mets and Marlins’ schedules into even tighter windows, and in an uncertain time, you never know what will happen between now and early September.
Both the Mets and Marlins had already experienced positive COVID-19 cases.
The NL East has been substantially affected by positive COVID-19 tests. The Marlins and Phillies were both forced to postpone games for a week after the Marlins experienced team-wide outbreak following the teams’ season-opening series. The Braves’ Freddie Freeman said he had a particularly nasty battle with the virus. And the Nationals saw star Juan Soto miss the start of their season after a positive COVID-19 test on Opening Day.
According to a running tally by USA Today, 26 of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams have had at least one player test positive for COVID-19.
