Statcast glitches out, projects two hilarious ‘record-breaking’ home runs
It’s exhibition season for the sports apps, too.
Sixteen teams were in action Monday night across Major League Baseball, warming up just days before this year’s very late Opening Day. And if you were only keeping track of the games on your phone, you might’ve seen history – twice.
Towards the end of the Phillies’ exhibition with the Yankees up in the Bronx on Monday, New York’s Mike Ford smoked a home run deep to right, tying things up for good. Ford certainly got all of the ball:

But MLB’s Statcast got a little carried away with its projected distance:

Call me a skeptic, but I’m gonna want another measurement.
And it wasn’t just the Phillies-Yankees game rewriting the record books.
Chicago’s squads were facing off Monday night, when White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez hit a grand slam to put the Sox up big over their crosstown rivals:

Jimenez put some real distance behind that ball, right?
Well, not according to ESPN’s app alert:
BREAKING NEWS: Shortest homer in MLB history hit by Eloy Jimenez of the Chicago White Sox. from r/mlb
Look, we all have a few days to regroup and get it together before these games start to count. I’m sure we can do it.
Or we can just celebrate Bryce Harper’s 1,429-foot homer next month. Whichever works.
