97.5 The Fanatic Phillies Notebook: (A Little) Trouble In Paradise
An entire season wasn’t going to pass without a short slump. The Philadelphia Phillies snapped their consecutive series unbeaten streak at 15.
They dropped two of three games in consecutive series on a West Coast swing in a down week. However, they hung onto a narrow lead over the New York Yankees as the best team in baseball.
The rival Atlanta Braves lost ace Spencer Strider early in the 2024 season. They’ve now lost reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. for the remainder of the season with a left ACL injury after the 26-year-old star tore his right ACL in 2021.
The devastating injuries have robbed baseball fans of two star players and changed the complexion of the NL East. The Phillies currently led Atlanta by six games entering play on May 30.

- Sunday 5/26: Loss 5-2
Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants

- Tuesday 5/28: Loss 1-0

Phillies (Finally) End Series Streak
The Phillies went on a streak of nearly two months without losing a series until a bizarre three-game set against a last-place team. Ranger Suarez finally tarnished his perfect 9-0 start with a lackluster outing in the series finale.
Coors Field hasn’t been kind to them since the legendary Ryan Howard double to knock the Rockies out of the NLDS in 2009. Then, they traveled to a park that’s somehow been worse.
The Giants had beaten the Phillies nine consecutive times at Oracle Park dating back to June 19, 2021 before the getaway game on Wednesday.
The Phillies lost in 11 innings on Friday in Colorado and 10 innings in San Francisco on Monday. They failed to score a run despite beginning each inning with a ghost runner in scoring position.
“That’s baseball. It’s the ebbs and flows of the game. This club’s going to hit. We’re just going through a rough patch right now, so we’ve got to come in here tomorrow and get after it again.” –Rob Thomson
They’ve split four home games that have gone to extra innings, but their road record in extras is now 1-5.
The failure to score reflects on the strategy of road teams that don’t benefit from moving the ghost runner along to take a one-run lead and turning it over to a home team with the same offensive advantage in the bottom of an inning.
Alec Bohm spoke with a measured approach after Monday’s loss. He had just committed two errors at third base and allowed two playable balls through the hole for additional base hits.
“162 games. I think you’re probably likely to lose back-to-back games eventually throughout that stretch, so I think it’s just stay course (and) keep doing what we’re doing. Obviously, we’re not naive. We know that we’re not going to float through a season with no adversity, no struggles.” -Alec Bohm
Bench-Clearing ‘Brawl’ (Baseball Style)
The West Coast trip didn’t end without drama. Bryce Harper spat back at Kyle Harrison after a pitch high and inside during his at-bat in the fourth inning. Harrison fired the next pitch in the same location.
Both benches and bullpens cleared. Giants hitting coach Pat Burrell was surprisingly the only one who made much physical contact.
Harper later said that Harrison didn’t mean to hit him. Rob Thomson also downplayed the altercation.
“That’s baseball. I think our guys just were a little bit upset that it (the pitch) came up and in a couple times on Harp(er). It looked worse than it was because the helmet flipped off. That’s when it broke, and it looked like from our vantage point that he got hit there.” -Rob Thomson
Ricky Bottalico, however, couldn’t ignore how Giants catcher Curt Casali set up outside the plate on both pitches.
The Phillies took five of seven from the Giants in the season series. The two teams could only face each other again in 2024 in a playoff series.
Harper also got ejected on Friday night at Coors Field on a questionable decision by home plate umpire Brian Walsh (aka 120). He responded with a big game on Saturday in the Phillies’ only win of the series.
Questions Surrounding Nick Castellanos
The slow start from Nick Castellanos has turned into a real concern. A hot streak in early May is long gone. The veteran right fielder ranks toward the bottom of qualified major league hitters in a concerning amount of statistical categories.
Nick Castellanos 2024 Season | MLB Rank in 2024 (Among 157 Qualified Hitters) | MLB Average in 2024 (per Baseball Reference) | Nick Castellanos 2013-2023 | |
Batting Average | .208 | 137 (13th percentile) | .240 | .276 |
On-Base Percentage | .271 | 148 (5th percentile) | .311 | .324 |
Slugging Percentage | .333 | 133 (14th percentile) | .387 | .475 |
OPS | .605 | 140 (11th percentile) | .697 | .799 |
Trade chatter about landing an outfielder has picked up. However, the Phillies expected Castellanos to be a key right-handed bat in a deep lineup after he led the team in extra-base hits in 2023.
“Nick is not going anywhere. This is only year three of a five-year, $100 million contract. They dangled his name last winter. They had zero takers… If you look at the construction of the roster, they’ve built a group in which he has to play.” –Jayson Stark on The Best Show Ever
Tom McCarthy also spoke on 97.5 The Fanatic about how Rob Thomson approached Castellanos last week to ask about potentially sitting a day to reset. The veteran right fielder declined.
Thomson’s patience and confidence in players has been his greatest strength as a manager the past three seasons. He’ll trust Castellanos to hit closer to his career averages.
Castellanos helped the Phillies salvage a 2-4 record on the road trip with three hits on Wednesday, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning. He also scored from second base on a single in the second inning with a great jump and hustle to the plate.
J.T Realmuto Hit Streak
The short slump has distracted from a great stretch for J.T. Realmuto. The 33-year-old catcher has raised his season average from .241 to .284 during his current 17-game hitting streak.
Realmuto missed three games from May 12-14. He led the majors in innings caught last season, and the wear and tear of the position was noticeable when he took a foul ball directly to his mask on Tuesday on the type of play that makes all viewers wince.

Garrett Stubbs occupies a roster spot largely because the Phillies value his presence in the clubhouse. He doesn’t provide long-term stability if Realmuto isn’t healthy, however.
Stubbs has caught Aaron Nola’s last three starts. He started again Wednesday on getaway day to allow Realmuto two days to rest before a presumed start on Friday night with Nola on the hill. A conservative rotation that minimizes Realmuto’s wear and tear might benefit the catching position later in the season.
Looking Ahead
The Phillies play their next six at Citizens Bank Park looking for a new series unbeaten streak. The homestand includes a showdown against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday Night Baseball on Lou Gehrig Day.
They’ll follow up the homestand with much-awaited trip to face the New York Mets in the MLB London Series on June 8 and 9.
