This Isn’t a Thank You Note. It’s a Love Letter
My wife said to me last night “I can’t wait till you are off these steroids, I’m not used to all this crying!”
She’s most certainly entitled as the steroids have given me a boost of strength but made me a little more “emotional” than normal. I’m ready to get back to feeling like myself too after my cancer-free diagnosis on Tuesday. I’ve got this one last chemo treatment to get through, but I’m a very fortunate man.
My journey began after a few months of feeling like garbage and my Apple Watch telling me I had A-fib. Instead, we found out after a colonoscopy that a tumor was in my colon and bleeding. Dr. Jack Collazzo found it and was able to get me diagnosed quickly.
I then had surgery for removal of an aggressive cancerous tumor in my colon with Dr. Henry Schoonyoung, which was flawless. He then referred me to Dr. John Sprandio Jr. who has quarterbacked my recovery with an ambitious 12-round chemo treatment.
His staff within the practice made me feel completely confident in this outcome. The best nurses you could find anywhere! Today, I will begin my last chemotherapy round. It will culminate on Friday. To have such talented and compassionate care made a huge difference.
Every day, I walked in at work to Bob Cooney asking me “How ya feeling?”
Three words, every day. I asked him to help me by keeping things normal. If you need a friend to lean on who will actually listen to how YOU want to be treated, call Bob.
Pat Egan and Connor Thomas make me weep on air shaving their heads with execs Joe Bell, Paul Blake, and Matt Cowper. That show of support bolstered me when I was sagging a bit. It was unreal. Shoutout to the amazing Michael Colletti at Sal’s Barbershop in KOP who shaved my hair down so any loss was hardly noticeable. Wait till you see how long I grow it now!
My crew at 97.5 The Fanatic supported me relentlessly. They had to talk me into taking some time off during treatments when they saw me dragging. Chuck Damico, who will exit for WMMR soon, usually has to run things by me a few times to get me to buy in. This was no different. Thanks for your patience.
Our sales team was so fantastic, as were my amazing clients who not only stood by me through this fight but checked in often to make sure I was OK.
I speak of my family often. We are a large group, and though we are mostly centralized here in the Philly area, their constant support not only met but exceeded my expectations. The prayer warriors, the calls, the visits to just check in. I am so fortunate that I was here facing this challenge with them holding me up.
My friends, too numerous to mention them all were relentless in their support. I’m fortunate to have what I consider extended family in so many great people all over the country. They never let me down and took great care of my mental state. I can’t repay their kindness but I hopefully will be able to mirror it. The notes, surprise gifts of food to lift my spirits and just your time and attention helped carry me through.
To my media brethren spread out far and wide, from my days at 680 The Fan in Atlanta to ESPN Radio, CBS Sports Radio, and now in Philadelphia, thank you for not forgetting our connection. Every text, every tweet, every email mattered. It meant more to me than you can imagine.
My listeners were unbelievable. Most of them have never even been in my presence, yet they took the time to make my day with a kind thought or offering up of prayers over and over again. The Fanatic loyal supporters were amazing making me feel like I am a part of their family. It meant so much to me!
Most of all, my wife deserves a medal. House-ridden for most of the last six months, she somehow kept her sanity with my steroid pity parties and endless napping. I’m sure it was as boring, frustrating, and scary for her as it was for me. I was always well taken care of, and her needs were always at the end of her To Do List.
My daughter Liv follows directions well. I told her to not let Dad’s cancer battle derail her “college experience” in her junior year. Her resilience and focus make me so proud. She checked in every day from Temple, but my illness never got her off track. She’s going to be a powerhouse. Wait, she already is!
If I forgot anyone, I blame it on my chemo brain, which is a REAL thing. I pray every night to get my mental clarity back!
I’ll try and remember every step of this battle, the highs and the lows. It ends in a bell ringing at my home on Friday afternoon. If you are fighting right now, I’m with you in spirit. If you helped me along the way, take a bow. You never know when that positive energy you provided me is going to boomerang back in your direction when you need it the most!
Here is to a wonderful upcoming holiday season. It will be one that I’ll never forget. Much love from a very special place in my heart. My victory is yours too. I needed you all and you came through!
Much love and God Bless you all,
JOHN
