Eagles Defeat Washington: Point /Counterpoint After A Sloppy Win
Let’s play a little point/counterpoint on the Philadelphia Eagles after their most recent not-so-comfortable victory over the Washington Commanders.
Positive: Only two NFL teams are 4-0, and the Eagles are one of them.
It appears that we have a collision course in the NFC between the Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers for regular-season supremacy. The value of grabbing home-field advantage is monumental. If the title game is on the road, you can’t feel as confident in a return trip to the Super Bowl.
You also need them to stay ahead of the Cowboys in the NFC East. They already spotted you an unlikely NFC loss against the Cardinals. An undefeated record is fantastic. The Eagles are the first NFL team to go 4-0 after losing the Super Bowl. Impressive!
Negative: The Eagles allowed a mediocre Washington Commanders team to take them to OT.
You can’t let a QB who threw four interceptions and lost 37-3 at home carve you. That’s exactly what happened. Sam Howell had a career day against what is supposed to be a very good defense. That’s a coaching problem.
Positive: A.J. Brown is a weapon of mass destruction.
A.J. continues to make headlines for all of the right (and sometimes wrong) reasons. His performance on Sunday afternoon was legendary. It reminded me of the way he dominated the Steelers last October. He’s an incredible weapon, and it appears he is unstoppable against most opponents.
Negative: Sean Desai has some serious questions to answer.
Jonathan Gannon was the favorite target of critics last season. Gannon’s teams tended to dominate mediocre teams. Desai needs more time, but it’s clear Eric Bienemy took him to school.
Positive: Jalen Hurts looks a lot more like Jalen Hurts.
Welcome back to the timing passer and quick to anticipate the pressure version of Jalen Hurts. It was his best performance of the season. With the defense slumping, he picked up the slack.
Negative: Each week, it’s a different concerning issue.
Whether it’s the coordinators on either side of the ball, sideline tantrums, or strange coaching decisions, the first four games have been more like an episode of Days of our Lives. That has to stop. It wasn’t a hallmark of the 2022 season.
The Rams and Jets are the next two teams up.
The schedule isn’t exactly “Murderers Row” the next two weekends, but both games are on the road. The opposition should give them a chance to clean up their messes.
It’s the same 4-0 record as last year, but this team looks VERY different.
Last year, the Eagles were storming out of the gate and impressing on both sides of the ball. This year. there are plenty of growing pains. Will the issues work themselves out? Stay tuned.
